Role Description The Head of Legal Department is a full-time, hybrid role based in Lagos, with flexibility for some work from home. This role leads the legal function, providing strategic legal guidance to management, ensuring that all operations and products comply with applicable laws, regulations, and Central Bank of Nigeria requirements. Day-to-day responsibilities include reviewing and drafting contracts and other legal documents, advising on corporate governance, assessing and mitigating legal risks, and handling legal issues arising from business activities. The Head of Legal Department will oversee regulatory filings, liaise with external counsel and regulatory authorities, and support internal teams with legal consulting on new products and initiatives. The role also involves developing and updating legal and compliance policies, delivering legal training to staff, and contributing to the company’s risk management and corporate strategy.
Qualifications
- Strong foundation in Law, with demonstrated experience in corporate and financial services law.
- Expertise in Legal Compliance, including familiarity with Central Bank of Nigeria regulations and relevant Nigerian statutes.
- Proficiency in Legal Consulting, providing clear, practical advice to management and cross-functional teams.
- Advanced skills in Legal Document Preparation, including drafting, reviewing, and negotiating contracts and policy documents.
- Ability to identify, analyze, and manage Legal Issues related to financial products, transactions, and regulatory matters.
- LL.B degree and admission to practice law in Nigeria; an LL.M or relevant certifications (e.g., compliance, governance) are an advantage.
- Several years of progressive legal experience in the financial services or banking sector, with prior leadership or departmental head experience preferred.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities, with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proven ability to work collaboratively with executive leadership, regulators, and external counsel, while maintaining high ethical standards and integrity.
