The Vice President (VP), Legal will serve as the global legal leader for our biotech company, overseeing all legal matters across research, development and enabling functions, with strong focus on US/China cross border legal matters. This role requires deep expertise in biotechnology/pharmaceutical law, including corporate legal, intellectual property (IP), partnership, and regulatory compliance. The ideal candidate will be a strategic advisor to the C-suite, ensuring legal alignment with business growth while mitigating risks in a highly regulated industry.
Key Responsibilities
1. Global Biotech Legal Strategy & Compliance
Provide strategic legal consultation on drug development, clinical trials, FDA/EMA/other regulatory approvals.
Ensure compliance with global biotech/pharma regulations (e.g., GxP, HIPAA, GDPR, FCPA, anti-bribery laws).
Advise on legal risks in R&D collaborations.
2. Intellectual Property (IP) & Partnership
Lead patent strategy, including prosecution, enforcement, and defense of IP portfolios.
Draft, Review, and revise complex partnering agreements incl. licensing, asset acquisition, and research collaborations.
3. Contracts
Oversee contracts with CROs, CDMOs, academic institutions, consultants, and various institutional partners.
4. Corporate Governance & Transactions
Advise the board and executives on corporate governance.
Manage compliance with global anti-corruption, trade sanctions, and ESG regulations.
5. Dispute Resolution & Risk Management
Oversee litigation, product liability, and regulatory investigations.
Develop risk mitigation strategies for clinical trials, data privacy, and drug discovery.
Manage relationships with external legal counsels.
6. Leadership & Team Development
Build and lead a high-performing global legal team.
Streamline legal operations to support rapid biotech innovation.
Foster a culture of compliance and ethical decision-making.
Qualifications & Requirements
Education:
JD from an accredited law school is required;
Admitted to state bar in New York or Massachusetts is required;
PhD in chemistry or life science is preferred.
Experience:
12+ years in biotech/pharma law (in-house or top-tier law firm).
Strong legal background in corporate legal, IP, partnering and compliance.
Experience in global environment (US, EU, APAC preferred).
Skills:
Strong negotiation, leadership, and business acumen.
Ability to translate complex legal issues into actionable business strategies.
