Job Duties

The Office of the Executive Secretary of the Supreme Court of Virginia seeks to hire a full-time Staff Attorney in the Department of Legislative and Public Relations.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities


Essential Duties & Responsibilities
– The primary responsibilities of the Staff Attorney will include (i) reviewing and analyzing legislation before the Virginia General Assembly to determine its effect on the Virginia court system; (ii) representing the Virginia court system at legislative committee meetings and in other committee meetings and workgroups; (iii) conducting legal research; (iv) preparing and editing reports to the General Assembly; (v) developing public information materials; and (v) preparing responses to requests for public information and records.


Minimum Qualifications

The most competitive candidates will possess:


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Licensed to practice law in Virginia and in good standing with the Virginia State Bar.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Sound working knowledge of Virginia court operations and the legal system.
  • Knowledge of the General Assembly process and the ability to track bills and testify or speak on behalf of the court system.
  • Proficiency in time management.
  • Ideal candidate will have some combination of the following: 2-5 years practice experience in Virginia’s trial level state courts; a judicial clerkship with a Virginia court; or experience responding to requests for public records.
