Sr Counsel, Claims Litigation Jobs in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada at Definity
Act as senior legal counsel in claims litigation matters for mid to high complexity files, including attending trials and appeals, contested motions, cross-examinations, examinations for discovery, mediations, preparing court documents, reviewing evidence, interviewing witnesses, conducting out-of-court examinations, acting in mediations or other ADR processes, engaging experts, supporting surveillance, client reporting, providing legal opinions, devising strategies, negotiating settlements, drafting settlement documents, and supporting staff delegation.
Contribute to the development of Claims Litigation Unit strategies and policies.
Serve as an advisor to Definity’s Claims department regarding claims litigation.
Travel as necessary for litigation files.
Mentor and train junior and intermediate claims counsel, law clerks, and assistants on file handling, legal practices, and courtroom strategies.
Provide high-level advice on litigation handling, strategy, and risk management; conduct educational seminars for Claims staff on litigation topics.
What Do You Bring to The Role?
Minimum 10+ (ideally 12+) years of post-call experience in civil litigation, preferably in personal injury or insurance claims.
Trial experience preferred.
Experience handling complex claims, contested motions, or appeals.
Full caseload management with primary carriage of complex matters.
Law Degree (LLB or Juris Doctor) from an accredited law school.
Licensed and in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint).
Exceptional communication, negotiation, and facilitation skills.
Sound judgment, critical analysis, problem-solving, and advice-giving abilities.
Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and manage conflicting priorities.
High ethics, integrity, confidentiality, assertiveness, adaptability, and teamwork skills.
Salary range: $111,300 – $205,500.
