Loudoun County Department of Family Services seeks a dedicated, professional candidate for its Paralegal role. The successful candidate will join the Quality, Data and Compliance unit and the diverse department that envisions better health, safety, and well-being for all. The Department supports individuals and families in the community to live their best lives while advocating for those most vulnerable and respecting their right to self-determination.

Job Summary

Essential Job Functions:

Provides skilled assistance to attorneys in a variety of areas; conducts legal research; consults with staff on issues related to court or legal proceedings
Maintains and updates case contact listing information; coordinates services needed for court hearings, such as court reporting or language translation; coordinates witnesses and testimony; contact with opposing counsel; contact with clerks of the court; maintains liaison with other agencies; monitors receipt of court reporting transcripts; assesses attorney needs for court hearings and meetings; and resolves administrative issues
Review and redact case records
Drafts a variety of legal documents under the supervision of an attorney
Prepares documents for court and commissioner hearings; assists attorneys with finalizing pleadings; reviews court files
Maintains data and file databases for the department/agency; creates reports that detail statistical and analytical information relating to documents received and reviewed

Hiring salary commensurate with experience.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent; prefer Associates or higher-level degree in paralegal studies; two (2) years of related paralegal work experience in a law office or government setting; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred:
Bi-lingual skills in Spanish preferred.

Job Contingencies and Special Requirements

Valid driver’s license and good driving record (driving records may be reviewed annually for continued qualification). Criminal background check required. Fingerprint, credit, and DMV background checks may also be required depending on assigned agency (criminal and DMV conducted through department VCIN).
Hold or obtain a paralegal certification recognized by the American Bar Association within six (6) months of hire. Candidates with any paralegal studies degree or a Juris Doctor degree are not required to obtain the paralegal certificate.
Hold or obtain a notary certification within three (3) months of hire; obtain VCIN certification within two (2) months of hire, depending on department assignment.
