Public Law Solicitor
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Public Law Solicitor for a permanent position at a leading law firm recognised in the Legal 500 and Chambers partners. The firm serves corporate entities and private individuals across over 25 practice areas in London and England & Wales, and holds Investors in People Gold accreditation and other regulatory accreditations.
Public Law Department
The Department has extensive experience in civil liberties and judicial review, covering HMRC, local authorities, NHS, planning, and immigration matters. The team regularly obtains emergency orders and other interim relief, pursues damages in County and High Courts, and successfully litigates to the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court. Success rates are high with award‑winning cases that set precedents.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Report directly to the Department Director
- Lead all aspects of Public Law work, providing technical expertise and guidance to team members
- Manage and supervise Solicitors, Trainee Solicitors and Caseworkers, allocating caseloads by type and complexity
- Assist with training and development within the department
- Handle a variety of Public Law matters: unlawful detention, false imprisonment, abuse of detention staff and removal escorts, conditions in detention, age assessments, asylum support, challenging non‑appealable decisions, removal notices, NHS & local authority challenges, immigration tribunal decisions, bail decisions, and non‑immigration issues such as data protection and housing
- Prepare and manage funding applications to the Legal Aid Agency
- Draft documents including witness statements, evidence, application forms, index of documents and letters of representation
- Attend conferences and court hearings
- Maintain a pro‑active professional approach, superior client care, and contribute to business development and marketing initiatives
Key Skills and Requirements
- Clean, valid practising certificate at the time of application
- Law Society Immigration Accreditation Level 2 (supervisor accreditation desirable but not mandatory)
- Strong management skills and ability to foster a culture of positive change and cross‑referrals
- Proven solicitor experience with key performance indicators
- Excellent client care and sensitivity in dealing with vulnerable clients
- Strong networking, communication, and business development skills
- Knowledge of Legal Aid guidance for public law matters and capability to service privately funded cases
- Extensive experience in public law advocacy (own advocacy is an advantage)
- IT proficiency – Microsoft Office and document management systems
