Description
The City of Norfolk’s Police Department is seeking candidates for the position of Police Officer (Part-Time Second Precinct Detective) within the Second Precinct. This position is responsible for assisting in the prosecution of offenders, maintaining administrative requirements, attending specialized training, working with citizens, advising community resource officers and supervisors, and cooperating with Norfolk’s Detective Division and Investigators within the surrounding cities.
Essential
Functions
Essential functions include, but are not limited to:
Assisting in the prosecution of offenders by investigating reports of crime, preparing cases for prosecution, testifying in court, and working with attorneys.
Maintaining knowledge of state, local, and federal laws.
Maintaining administrative requirements by preparing reports, paperwork, and forms.
Following up with citizens via email or telephone to update reports.
Attending specialized training.
Preparing case files, affidavits, court orders, and search warrants.
Interfacing daily with reporting management systems to review and research reported crimes, and to disseminate information.
Collecting CCTV footage for investigations.
Advising community resource officers and supervisors of crime trends in their sectors.
Working in cooperation with Norfolk’s Detective Division and Investigators in surrounding cities to address concurrent cases and persons of interest.
Working independently to solve cases.
Education
/Experience
Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.
One (1) year of consecutive active service as a certified police officer in Virginia for a municipal, county, and/or state law enforcement agency.
Three (3) years of consecutive active service as a certified police officer in another state of the United States for a municipal, county, and/or state law enforcement agency.
The preferred candidate will possess:
Prior sworn law enforcement experience.
Prior Detective experience.
Prior Investigation experience.
Additional Information & Requirements
Valid Driver’s License.
Must be a U.S. Citizen (born or naturalized).
Current Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) Law Enforcement Officer certification.
Must successfully pass all entry level testing and assessments.
Work Schedule:
Monday-Friday, day shift hours with the flexibility to occasionally work weekends; 20-hour work week maximum.

Intermittent/Retiree Part-time Employees:
Intermittent/Retiree part-time employees will work no more than 1040 hours in a twelve (12) month period of time. The hours are flexible and based on the department’s operations needs. This position is not eligible for benefits.
