Pitta & Baione LLP is a leading law firm representing survivors, responders, and families affected by the September 11th attacks. We help clients navigate the World Trade Center Health Program and the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund (VCF) to obtain the benefits and compensation they deserve.
We are seeking a compassionate, dependable, resourceful, and detail-oriented paralegal who is professionally fluent in speaking, reading, and writing Chinese. Fluency in Mandarin and/or Cantonese is required.
Our clients include individuals and families dealing with serious illness, loss, and other difficult circumstances. Compassion, patience, and professionalism are essential. At the same time, VCF claims require exceptional attention to detail, persistence, and follow-through. We need someone who cares about our clients, takes ownership of their work, catches the details that matter, and can be trusted to see assignments through to completion.
Responsibilities:
- Initiate and develop new September 11th compensation claims.
- Communicate directly with Chinese-speaking and bilingual clients and families, primarily by telephone and secondarily by email and other written correspondence, in both Chinese and English.
- Gather, review, and analyze information and documentation relevant to VCF claims.
- Investigate the facts and circumstances of each claim and identify missing information or evidence.
- Work with clients, family members, witnesses, medical providers, employers, unions, and other third parties to obtain necessary documentation.
- Draft legal documents, factual narratives, correspondence, and other written submissions in support of VCF claims.
- Prepare documents and correspondence related to the World Trade Center Health Program.
- Assist with the preparation and submission of claims to the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund.
- Follow up on outstanding records, documentation, and assignments through completion.
- Maintain complete and accurate electronic case records and document case activity.
- Manage multiple cases, deadlines, and priorities simultaneously.
- Work closely with attorneys and other team members to move cases forward efficiently and provide excellent client service.
Requirements
- Professional fluency in speaking, reading, and writing Chinese.
- Comfort and confidence speaking with clients frequently by telephone.
- Excellent verbal communication skills in English. You must be able to communicate clearly, confidently, and professionally with clients, attorneys, and third parties.
- Strong written English and writing fundamentals. You should be able to communicate clearly and accurately in writing. We will provide training on the drafting of legal documents, factual narratives, correspondence, and other claim-related submissions.
- Compassion and empathy when working with clients and families.
- Exceptional attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy.
- Reliability and dependability — consistent follow-through is essential.
- Resourcefulness and initiative — when a problem arises, you work toward a solution.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple cases and deadlines.
- Integrity, sound judgment, and accountability.
- A strong work ethic and willingness to take ownership of assignments.
- Ability to work independently without constant supervision.
- A team-oriented attitude and willingness to help colleagues when needed.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office or comparable office productivity software.
Prior paralegal, legal, claims, healthcare, or investigative experience is preferred.
