Paralegal – Part Time

JOB SUMMARY
This position is responsible for providing paralegal services in support of department programs and operations.
MAJOR DUTIES
- Attends court; takes detailed notes of each case; transcribes notes and maintains related records.
- Transcribes tapes of court orders; records orders to master order list; monitors the processing of orders; forwards orders to appropriate parties for review; makes revisions and forwards final drafts to appropriate parties.
- Prepares and maintains accurate filing, including petitions, summons, subpoenas, court orders, hearing notices.
- Prepares filings for IV-D Child Support Services, Adult Protective Services, subpoenas for witnesses, requests for records, and writs to transport inmates to court.
- Notarizes legal documents.
- Receives and sorts mail.
- Performs related duties.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
- Knowledge of paralegal principles and practices.
- Knowledge of legal research principles.
- Knowledge of the operations and procedures of relevant courts.
- Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.
- Skill in prioritizing and organizing work.
- Skill in the maintenance of files and records.
- Skill in the use of such office equipment as a computer, scanner, fax machine, and copier.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Attorney assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include court policies and procedures, court orders, and department and county policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
- The work consists of related paralegal duties. Strict deadlines and the need for accuracy contribute to the complexity of the position.
- The purpose of this position is to provide paralegal support for assigned department operations. Successful performance contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of those operations.
CONTACTS
- Contacts are typically with co-workers, other county employees, court officials, attorneys, paralegals, law enforcement personnel, and members of the general public.
- Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
- The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light objects.
- The work is typically performed in an office and courtroom.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
None.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
- Certification as a Notary Public or ability to obtain within six (6) months.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
