Essential Job Functions:
This position is responsible for specialized clerical work at the beginning levels in the civil section of the District Court. It requires that all essential duties assigned be performed in an accurate and prompt manner. While this position will have specific and measured assigned duties the employee will be expected to perform.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Open and accept civil filings through File & Serve that are civil pretrial and post judgment
related. This includes but not limited to sending back deficient filings, tasking work to
appropriate queues, and editing documents received.
Process all motions and filings and ensures all necessary documents are complete and
accurate in accordance with established court procedures. Enter service, compose civil dockets and affidavit judgments. Process all other requests that are pretrial and post judgment related.
Review and process all other civil documents. Perform other essential functions as required, such as sorting, filing, and scanning various documents and files in accordance with MDEC procedures
Receive and process all landlord tenant filings that are filed in person and through File & Serve.
All other duties assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
High School or GED
Experience:
One (1) year of work experience, preferably in court operations or in the fields of criminal justice, parole and probation, legal or financial services.
Note:
A Bachelor?s Degree may substitute the required work experience.
A Paralegal/Associates Degree or 60 college credits may substitute the required work experience.
A Paralegal Certificate may substitute the required work experience
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
General office practices, procedures, and equipment.
Standard legal forms and documents used in the Judiciary.
Basic English and arithmetic to include, but not limited to, spelling, punctuation, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Skill in:
Customer service and handling problems tactfully and patiently.
Typing on a personal computer.
Accuracy and attention to detail.
Ability to:
Use standard office and business equipment including, but not limited to, personal computers, word processing, spreadsheets, database software, copier, microfilm machine, register, scanner, fax machine, etc.
Use and maintain alphabetical and numerical filing systems.
Communicate clearly, tactfully, and effectively with judges, the public, police agencies, attorneys, and other court officials and personnel, both verbally and in writing.
Understand and abide by departmental rules, regulations, and procedures.
Exercise tact, diplomacy, and impartiality in dealing with the public, law enforcement personnel, and attorneys.
Follow procedures, verbal and written instructions, and protocols for any given assignment.
Use proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
Exercise independent judgement in interpreting and applying appropriate policy, procedure, rule, law, and/or regulation to a situation.
Verify scanned documents from other co-workers.
Exercise tact and understanding in pressured situations.
Physical Requirements:
Light work. Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for sedentary work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for light work.
Equipment, Machinery and Tools:
Fax machine, computer equipment, telephone, copier, scanner
Software and Computer Skills:
Microsoft Suites, Odyssey, personal computer knowledge.
