Legal Counsel Jobs in Damansara, Selangor, Malaysia at Ormond Hotels Group

Title: Legal Counsel

Company: Ormond Hotels Group

Location: Damansara, Selangor, Malaysia

Who Are We?

We're a growing Malaysian hospitality and education group with operations spanning Malaysia, Japan and the UK.

In education, our portfolio includes Epsom College in Malaysia, one of Asia's leading British international boarding schools, and the Mouratoglou Tennis Programme at Epsom, the region's premier tennis academy developed in partnership with Patrick Mouratoglou. In hospitality, our brands span the market — from boutique, design-led properties like The Chow Kit, recognised by Condé Nast, The New York Times and CNN, and MoMo's Kuala Lumpur, to Tune Hotels, our accessible, high-volume brand reaching a broader traveller base.

We're actively growing both portfolios through acquisitions, joint ventures, partnerships and organic development — which means this role calls for a lawyer comfortable moving across deal types and structures, not just one flavour of transaction.

That range is exactly why our legal team matters. As the Group grows across sectors and jurisdictions, our lawyers sit close to the business — advising on hospitality operations, education, sports partnerships, property development, corporate projects and strategic initiatives, often several at once. You'll partner directly with business leaders across entities, giving practical, commercially grounded advice that lets decisions move quickly while keeping risk in view.

This role suits a lawyer who wants more than a seat at the table — someone energised by variety, comfortable operating across industries, and looking to build a long-term in-house career inside a group with genuine momentum and ambition.

What Will You Do?

  • Support complex transactions from structuring to execution, including hotel management and franchise agreements, joint ventures, acquisitions, and development-related deals. Assist in coordinating with investors, developers, and financial institutions to support commercially viable outcomes.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate a broad range of agreements, including supplier and vendor contracts, tenancy and lease arrangements, licensing and franchising documents, consultancy agreements, and financing or security documentation, under the guidance of senior legal leadership.
  • Work closely with senior stakeholders across the Group CEO, COO, Operations, Finance, Development, and HR teams to provide timely legal input that balances commercial objectives with risk management.
  • Support feasibility reviews and deal structuring at the early stages of new developments, conversions, or acquisitions, ensuring alignment with group strategy and applicable regulatory frameworks.
  • Assist in liaising with banks and lenders on loan documentation, facility agreements, and security documentation to support project funding and refinancing initiatives.
  • Monitor and coordinate compliance with corporate, hospitality, labor, safety, and real estate regulations across jurisdictions, ensuring operational licenses, permits, and statutory filings are properly maintained.
  • Support the management of disputes and litigation involving guests, employees, vendors, or regulators by coordinating with internal stakeholders and external counsel, while tracking cost and reputational exposure.
  • Assist in protecting intellectual property and brand assets, including trademarks and digital rights, and ensure adherence to data protection and PDPA requirements.
  • Maintain and update corporate governance documentation, including board papers, shareholder resolutions, and statutory records, supporting company secretarial matters across group entities.
  • Contribute to internal legal awareness initiatives by supporting training sessions and compliance briefings for management and operational teams.

Who Are We Looking For?

To succeed in this role, you are expected to demonstrate the right attitude, behaviours, skills, and values aligned with the Group’s standards:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Law (LLB) from a recognised university and admitted to practise in at least one common law jurisdiction

  • Minimum 8–10 yearsof relevant experience, preferably with exposure to both law firm and in-house environments.
  • Solid experience in commercial contract drafting and review, corporate advisory support, regulatory compliance, and basic dispute management.
  • Exposure to hospitality, real estate, property development, or service-related industries will be an added advantage.
  • Strong command of written and spoken English and Bahasa Malaysia. Additional language skills relevant to the Group’s regional (APAC) operations will be an advantage.
  • Good interpersonal skills with the ability to build working relationships across departments and levels.
  • Commercially aware and solution-oriented, with the ability to manage day-to-day legal matters efficiently while supporting broader business initiatives.
