Legal Assistant 1 – Tacoma Division

The Attorney General’s Office is recruiting for a permanent full‑time Legal Assistant 1 in the Social & Health Services Section of the Tacoma Division, located in Tacoma, Washington. The position is represented by the Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE).

Salary & Stipends: Legal Assistant 1 (Range 42) salary range: $45,024 – $60,132 annually; $45,924 – $61,332 annually effective 7/1/2026. Incumbents assigned to the Seattle office receive an additional 5% King County Location Pay stipend. Incumbents assigned to a position requiring dual language skills receive a 5% Dual Language Requirement Pay stipend.

Responsibilities

  • Open and close litigation case files.
  • Accurately perform case docketing functions and data entry into legal databases.
  • Manage filing, storage, and organization of electronic case files.
  • Facilitate retrieval of archived physical files from the state archives, maintain a record of chain of custody, and return files promptly.
  • Prepare, finalize for signature, and file legal documents with the proper authority.
  • Prepare basic legal correspondence with clients and others requiring knowledge of legal terminology, policies, and procedures.
  • Monitor electronic mailboxes per division protocols and policies.
  • Periodically cover front‑desk duties such as answering phone calls, assisting the public, scheduling conference rooms, processing print projects, managing mail, and handling legal messenger deliveries.
  • Log, prepare, and maintain invoices for litigation costs.
  • Provide courier service to Pierce and Kitsap County courthouses.

Qualifications

  • Option 1:
    High School diploma or equivalent and two years of clerical experience, including a minimum of one year in a legal environment.
  • Option 2:
    Two years of legal office experience.
  • Option 3:
    Three years of college education and/or relevant experience.
  • Option 4: A two‑year degree in Legal Secretary Studies, Paralegal studies, or a related field.

Conditions of Employment

A valid non‑probationary Washington State Driver’s License is required to lawfully operate state vehicles.
