Job Description
Duties include conducting legal and legislative policy research, analyzing proposed legislation, and interpreting statutory language. The Staff Attorney will also assist with constituent services, provide administrative support, and help coordinate office policy initiatives. Experience or academic background in business, criminal justice, higher education, finance, jurisprudence, natural resources, or transportation policy is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
The successful candidate is a self-starter with excellent legal research and writing skills, strong organizational abilities, and the capacity to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines. The role requires discretion, attention to detail, sound judgment, and the ability to work collegially with diverse stakeholders. Familiarity with the Texas legislative process and legal frameworks relevant to state government is essential.
Requirements
Applicants must have a JD from an accredited law school and be licensed (or eligible for licensure) to practice law in Texas. Prior experience as a full-time policy aide or counsel in the Texas Senate or House of Representatives is strongly preferred. The ideal candidate will have a working knowledge of Senate District 21 and a demonstrated commitment to public service. Bilingual proficiency is a plus. Candidates must be flexible to the evolving demands of the legislative session and willing to travel within the district occasionally. Salary will be commensurate with experience.
