JOB OBJECTIVES: An Assistant Public Defender is charged with the responsibility of representing the indigent defendant accused of criminal or civil offenses that threaten the potential loss of liberty. A candidate should demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of criminal law, the court system, legal procedures and legal terminology. A successful candidate should also demonstrate the ability to think logically; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; possess a dedicated work ethic; and be willing to accept the responsibilities of a demanding criminal practice and caseload.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Providing legal representation in the Portage County Municipal and Common Pleas Courts for adult cases, or in the Portage County Juvenile Court;
Responsibility to supervise and train misdemeanor Assistant Public Defenders in the representation of felony criminal Defendants in pleas, motions and trials;
Providing coverage and support in all other Courts on an as needed basis;
Conducting legal research;
Providing legal advice to clients;
Investigating cases and preparing for trials;
Serving subpoenas;
Participating in pre-trial proceedings, trials, and post-trial proceedings;
Preparing and filing pleadings;
Drafting briefs and presenting oral arguments for appeals;
Keeping informed and updated on changes or developments in Ohio or federal law as may relate to the duties of the position and the mission of the office.
NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Providing assistance to clients on related civil matters;
Supervising and training law students or undergraduate interns;
Making public appearances on behalf of the office;
Attending seminars and other training;
Performs related Essential and Non-Essential functions as needed.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Critical Skills/Expertise:
Knowledge of Court rules and procedures;
Comprehensive knowledge of criminal law, the Court system, legal procedures, and legal terminology;
Knowledge of the Ohio Revised Code, County Personnel Policy, Ohio Code of Professional Responsibility, Local Rules of Court, and the Ohio Rules of Court;
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
