🚀 We’re Hiring | Head of Legal
Merchant Bank of Sri Lanka & Finance PLC (MBSL), a leading finance company and a subsidiary of Bank of Ceylon, is inviting applications from qualified and experienced professionals for the position of Head of Legal.
Key Responsibilities
• Lead and oversee the Legal Division and provide strategic legal guidance to the Board of Directors, Senior Management, and business units
• Ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, Central Bank directions, and corporate governance requirements
• Advise on corporate, commercial, banking, finance, recovery, litigation, and regulatory matters
• Oversee drafting, review, negotiation, and execution of contracts, agreements, policies, and other legal documentation
• Manage litigation, recovery actions, disputes, and coordinate with external legal counsel
• Identify, assess, and mitigate legal and regulatory risks
• Provide legal support for business transactions, investments, recoveries, and strategic projects
• Develop and implement legal policies, procedures, and governance frameworks
• Manage legal service costs and meet established fee income targets
• Represent the Company in discussions with regulators, government authorities, legal professionals, and other stakeholders when required
• Lead, mentor, and develop the Legal Division to ensure operational excellence and professional standards
Qualifications & Experience
• Attorney-at-Law of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka and Notary Public
• Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from a recognized university
• Additional professional qualifications in Banking, Finance, Compliance, Risk Management, or Corporate Governance will be a distinct advantage
• 15–20 years of post-qualification experience in the legal field, including senior managerial or leadership experience
• Prior experience in banking, finance, leasing, or other regulated financial institutions will be a significant advantage
• Strong knowledge and practical exposure in corporate law, banking and finance law, commercial law, recoveries, litigation, and regulatory compliance

• Strong leadership and people management capabilities
• Excellent analytical, negotiation, communication, and legal drafting skills
• Ability to provide strategic legal solutions aligned with business objectives
• High level of integrity, professionalism, confidentiality, and sound judgment
• Ability to multitask and work under pressure while maintaining a positive mindset
