Prisoners’ Legal Services of New York (PLS) has multiple paralegal openings in its new Disciplinary Representation Unit, Albany office.
About PLS
PLS is a non-profit legal services organization providing civil legal services to indigent individuals in New York State correctional facilities in cases where no other counsel is available. Founded in 1976 in response to the Attica uprising, PLS has regional offices in Albany, Buffalo, Ithaca, and Newburgh. PLS engages in civil rights advocacy and litigation primarily in cases involving claims of unconstitutional conditions of confinement, prolonged placement in solitary confinement, deliberate indifference to serious mental health and medical needs, excessive use of force, violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act, access to education, child visitation and support, immigration, and sentence computation issues. PLS has regional offices in Albany, Buffalo, Ithaca, and Newburgh.
Job Description
The Disciplinary Representation Unit is a new unit within PLS. In enacting the HALT Act (Humane Alternatives to Long-Term Solitary Confinement), the NYS Legislature granted incarcerated New Yorkers the right to representation in prison disciplinary hearings. The DRU will be focused on fulfilling this exciting and unmet need for representation. As such, paralegals will be responsible for responding to requests for representation, gathering evidence and testimony, and coordinating representation. Paralegals will also assist attorneys in providing counsel and advice and representation at disciplinary hearings, draft administrative appeals and assist in drafting legal pleadings.
The ideal paralegal candidate is committed to providing legal services to the disadvantaged and to providing legal support to attorneys. Applicants must have earned their paralegal certification or had a minimum of two years’ comparable experience in a legal services organization. Applicants should be self-motivated and capable of complex analytical work. Applicants must possess excellent legal research and writing skills, strong interpersonal skills, and a desire to work in a collaborative work environment. Applicants must also be able to balance managing a caseload with performing administrative tasks for the office as needed. Typical duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Answering phone calls, receiving intakes, and speaking with individuals requesting services on behalf of their incarcerated loved ones;
Opening mail and processing intake including case management system data entry and supporting administrative tasks;
Scheduling and calendaring of deadlines;
Composing written case work materials for attorneys and legal professionals;
Sending and following up with prison staff on legal calls, representation and record requests;
Working cooperatively with clients, peers and supervisors; and
Working with clients or family members directly to gather and organize information and evidence for representation.
Qualifications
Must have a bachelor’s degree in human services or legal studies, paralegal certification, or two years of experience in a legal services organization;
Demonstrated interest in learning and working closely with attorneys to support and provide effective representation in adversarial settings;
Ability to work in a collaborative team model;
Ability to effectively communicate with and between clients, prison officials, colleagues and partners;
Strong organizational skills, attention to detail and time management;
Ability to juggle a variety of tasks and roles, often involving time limits and/or deadlines;
Strong verbal and written communication skills;
Experience using Westlaw for legal research and in preparing legal documents for attorneys preferred;
Fluency in Spanish is preferred; and
A commitment to, and passion for, serving vulnerable New Yorkers of diverse backgrounds.
Salary and Benefits
PLSNY is a unionized workplace, and salaries are set pursuant to a collective bargaining agreement. SALARY TRANSPARENCY: The anticipated annual salary range for this position is $48,864- $59,763. The specific salary offer will be dependent on the candidate’s qualifications, including collectively bargained salary steps for unionized roles.
