Position: DEPUTY SHERIFF PRIVATE (Entry-Level)
About the Position
Prince George’s County Office of the Sheriff is seeking qualified candidates to fill multiple permanent, full‑time entry‑level Deputy Sheriff Private positions, grade W21. Candidates with previous law enforcement experience must apply under the Experienced Deputy Sheriff announcement.
Responsibilities
- Provide effective and efficient law enforcement services to residents of Prince George’s County.
- Perform general law enforcement and investigations, serving warrants and/or extraditing persons.
- Transport prisoners to and from institutions and courts throughout Maryland and the United States.
- Arrest, detain, and process prisoners in the custody of the Office of the Sheriff.
- Serve civil processes and summonses.
- Execute writs and court orders.
- Maintain security in the courtrooms of the Circuit and District Courts.
- Monitor prisoners in holding areas.
- Assist with court‑related house evictions.
- Complete required reports.
Minimum Qualifications
- U.S. citizen.
- High school diploma, graduate, or G.E.D.
- At least 20 years and 6 months of age at time of application.
- Valid driver’s license and at least 6 months of post‑license driving experience.
- Successful completion of written test, agility test, oral examination, and shift work.
- Successfully pass a background investigation.
Preferred Qualifications
- 60 or more college credit hours.
- Current student or recent graduate of an approved MPCTC accredited institution with certification.
Essential Employee
This position is designated essential. The incumbent must be willing to work during emergencies or special events, and may be assigned to any shift to ensure 24‑hour coverage.
