The Early Childhood Education and Care Department was established on July 1, 2020. The Department’s aim is to create a more cohesive, equitable, and effective early childhood system in New Mexico. That means coordinating a continuum of programs from prenatal to five and ensuring that families in every corner of the state can access the services they need.

Why does the job exist?
This position monitors compliance with applicable state and federal regulations for all licensed child care facilities and out-of-school time programs, ensuring the health, safety, and development of children in New Mexico while promoting equal access to child care services.
How does it get done?
This position conducts on-site survey visits to identify potential hazards for children and staff, monitors out-of-school time programs, and promotes the establishment and maintenance of child care centers that provide a humane, safe, and developmentally appropriate environment. Additionally, it investigates incidents and complaints to determine timely and appropriate actions, prepares reports, and participates in administrative hearings statewide. This role also provides training and technical assistance to child care providers on regulations, developmentally appropriate practices, and early childhood environments to enhance the quality of child care services across the state.

Private or public facilities that provide child care, educational services, and supervision to children of New Mexico for less than 24 hours of any day; children and families, community and internal staff/management.

Minimum Qualification
High School Diploma or Equivalency and two (2) years of experience in investigations, regulation, policy, statutory, and/or contract compliance. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling two (2) years may substitute for the required experience.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License. Pre-employment background investigation is required and is conditional pending results.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending, and reaching may be required. This is a field position with direct client interaction and frequent travel will be required.
