Court Services Officer-Pretrial & Probation

County of Rockingham, VA

Employment Status: Full-Time
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Experience Required: 2 years of related work experience
Minimum Education Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in a related field
Direct Supervisor: Court Services Director
Primary Work Location: Office setting
Physical requirements: This is sedentary work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects.
Certification: VCIN certification within 90 days of hire; valid driver’s license.

Job Summary
The Court Services Officer will assist in the day-to-day operations of the Rockingham-Harrisonburg Court Services Unit. This position provides supervision and case management to local probationers referred through the Courts. This position may carry a caseload for pretrial placements. Supervision of all cases are supervised in accordance with Evidence Based Practices and in compliance with standards set by the Department of Criminal Justice Services.

Essential Job Functions

Meet with offenders/defendants placed on supervision

Attend court proceedings on your assigned day(s) and testify as needed

Administer sited drug and alcohol testing

Must be able to multi-task in a fast paced, high-volume environment

Must be able to work as part of a team within the Pretrial Division and the entire Community Corrections Department

Strong communication skills to interact with representatives from the legal community such as Commonwealth Attorneys, defense attorneys, and local law enforcement to discuss cases

Submit court reports regarding court ordered compliance and file Show Cause and Capias requests

Maintain a caseload of placements and coordinate appropriate services and referrals

Conduct risk assessments for probation (M-ost and OST) and pretrial services (Praxis)

Maintain offender files and utilize the computer database management system (PTCC) provided by the Department of Criminal Justice Services

Maintain a professional working relationship with Judges, Clerks, Commonwealth Attorneys, and Law Enforcement regarding offenders/defendants’ supervision

Conduct criminal history record inquiries through VCIN/NCIC

Meet with and interview criminal defendants, some of whom have a history of violent behavior

Provide input to Director on a systems approach for services

Perform related tasks as required

Knowledge
Local criminal justice system, Code of Virginia and DCJS minimum standards, VA Court Records

Skills
Public speaking, oral and written communication, Microsoft Office experience required

Abilities
Successfully complete a criminal background investigation, ability to obtain and maintain all Department of Criminal Justice Services mandated training, manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, organize and prioritize work, maintain regular attendance at work
