We are a well-established San Diego law firm that has served community associations for more than 20 years. Our practice focuses on the representation of common interest developments (condominiums, planned developments, and other community associations) throughout Southern California. We offer a collegial, professional environment in our downtown San Diego office, with many long-time employees.
Position Summary
We are seeking a full-time paralegal to support our assessment collection practice. The Collections Paralegal will manage a caseload of delinquent assessment matters from initial referral through resolution, working closely with attorneys, community association boards, and management companies. Prior experience with assessment collections, common interest developments, or creditor-side collection work is preferred, but we will train a motivated candidate with strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Responsibilities
- Open and manage collection files from referral through closure, including maintaining accurate account ledgers and payment histories
- Prepare pre-lien demand letters, assessment lien notices, and related statutory notices in compliance with the Davis-Stirling Act (Civil Code sections 5650 et seq.)
- Record and release assessment liens and coordinate with title companies and the County Recorder
- Draft and monitor payment plans, and track payments and compliance
- Prepare pleadings, judgments, and post-judgment enforcement documents in small claims and civil collection actions
- Monitor bankruptcy filings, prepare proofs of claim, and track relief-from-stay issues
- Respond to escrow demands and payoff requests
- Communicate professionally with homeowners, board members, community managers, and opposing counsel
- Calendar statutory deadlines and maintain case status reports for clients
Qualifications
- Paralegal certificate satisfying Business and Professions Code section 6450, or equivalent qualifying experience
- Experience with assessment collections, HOA/community association law, or creditor-side collections preferred
- Familiarity with the Davis-Stirling Act and California lien and foreclosure procedures a plus
- Strong attention to detail, particularly with figures, ledgers, and statutory deadlines
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office; experience with legal case management and billing software a plus
- Ability to manage a high-volume caseload independently and prioritize competing deadlines
Compensation and Benefits
- $25.00 to $35.00 per hour, commensurate with experience
