Job Overview

As an Associate Senior Counsel you will handle litigation arising from claims asserted against policyholders or the company, taking cases from inception through trial and appeal. You will deliver high‑quality, proactive case handling and will independently manage a caseload of moderate to higher complexity matters, including Major Case litigation depending on line of business.
You will mentor less experienced attorneys while delivering optimal results for Travelers’ insured customers.
Key Responsibilities
- Leverage pre‑trial and trial experience to apply effective litigation skills and techniques to try cases to verdict or negotiate resolution.
- Conduct proficient to advanced legal research and demonstrate strong persuasive legal writing and presentation skills.
- Draft substantive pleadings, motions, briefs, discovery and other legal documents.
- Attend court events, depositions, and other appointments independently.
- Provide in‑depth, substantive case analysis and recommendations to insured clients and Claims partners on file handling strategies.
- Collaborate with expert witnesses and consultants to develop case strategies, evaluate technical matters, and prepare compelling testimony for litigation.
- Build and maintain strong internal and external client and business partner relationships, managing responsibilities for client and partner interactions.
- Provide internal and external training, seminars, and legal updates to insured clients and Claims partners.
- Lead through mentoring other attorneys and legal support staff.
- Contribute to special projects and identify opportunities to support office goals and business needs.
- Fully and effectively utilize available technology, case management system, and automation.
- Travel as required to meet business needs.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications
- 5+ years of insurance defense litigation experience as a practicing attorney.
- Proven track record of preparing and/or litigating jury trials, with a history of successful courtroom outcomes.
- Strong technical knowledge in the practice area(s) and ability to communicate complex information to diverse audiences.
- Proficient oral and written advocacy skills with experience in summary judgment and/or appellate success.
- In‑depth knowledge of the bench, bar, local jurisdictional practices, and adversaries.
- Capable of fostering collaborative relationships with colleagues, customers, and business partners to deliver exceptional service.
- Demonstrated leadership through mentoring and influencing skills.
- Strong decision‑making and advanced negotiation skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities with attention to detail, urgency, and responsiveness.
- A flexible and agile mindset with willingness to take on new challenges as needs evolve.
- Juris Doctorate or equivalent international legal degree from an accredited law school.
- 4 years of experience as a practicing attorney.
- Active license in good standing to practice law in the state(s) where representation is required.
- Regularly handles hearings, trials, dispositive motion arguments, depositions, or other court proceedings and can travel to meetings.
- Valid driver’s license (required depending on location).
