Associate Attorney Jobs in Detroit, MI at Detroit Legal Group, PLLC

Overview

Detroit Legal Group, PLLC is a growing boutique litigation firm located in the heart of downtown Detroit, MI. We represent individuals, businesses, property owners, and entrepreneurs throughout Michigan in complex and high-stakes litigation.

Our primary practice areas include:

  • Commercial and Residential Real Estate Litigation
  • Personal Injury
  • Criminal Defense
  • Business and Commercial Litigation

We are seeking an ambitious, intelligent, highly motivated, dynamic, and detail-oriented Associate Attorney who aspires to become an exceptional litigator, not simply another attorney. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys solving complex legal problems, thrives in a fast-paced litigation environment, and seeks meaningful courtroom experience from day one. This role offers an exciting opportunity to engage in a diverse range of legal practice areas, including commercial and residential real estate litigation, personal injury, criminal defense, business and commercial litigation, and more. As an integral part of our firm, you will provide high-quality legal counsel, support litigation efforts, and assist in drafting and reviewing legal documents. The ideal candidate is motivated, proactive, and eager to develop their expertise across multiple legal disciplines while delivering exceptional client service. Applicants with 1–5 years of litigation experience are preferred. Candidates awaiting bar admission who have substantial law clerk or litigation experience with a law firm are encouraged to apply.

What Makes This Opportunity Different: Unlike many firms where associates spend years performing only research or document review, our associates are entrusted with significant responsibility early in their careers. You will work directly with experienced trial attorneys, appear in court, take depositions, argue motions, negotiate settlements, interact directly with clients, and participate in every phase of litigation. We are looking for attorneys who view the practice of law as a profession—not simply a job.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct sophisticated legal research using Lexis+, Westlaw, ICLE, Fastcase, and other legal research platforms.
  • Draft persuasive pleadings, dispositive motions, briefs, discovery requests and responses, contracts, correspondence, and appellate filings.
  • Develop litigation strategy alongside senior attorneys.
  • Prepare witnesses, clients, and experts for depositions and trial.
  • Attend hearings, depositions, mediations, arbitrations, and trials.
  • Conduct legal analysis and provide practical recommendations for clients.
  • Communicate professionally and regularly with clients regarding case strategy and developments.
  • Manage an active litigation caseload while consistently meeting court deadlines.
  • Review discovery, analyze evidence, and identify strengths, weaknesses, and legal issues.
  • Stay current on developments in Michigan law and applicable federal law.
  • Assist in business development and help cultivate long-term client relationships.

Experience

  • 1–5 years of litigation experience (law clerk experience considered for recent graduates)
  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an ABA-accredited law school
  • Admission to the Michigan Bar (or pending admission for qualified applicants)
  • Exceptional legal research, writing, and analytical abilities
  • Outstanding oral advocacy and communication skills
  • Strong courtroom presence and confidence under pressure
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills
  • The ability to prioritize multiple matters without sacrificing quality
  • Sound judgment and strong attention to detail
  • Professionalism, integrity, and accountability
  • A willingness to accept constructive feedback and continuously improve
  • A strong work ethic and genuine desire to become an outstanding trial lawyer

Preferred Qualifications

Preference may be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following:

  • Civil litigation
  • Real estate litigation
  • Personal injury litigation
  • Criminal litigation
  • Motion practice
  • Depositions
  • Discovery disputes
  • Trial preparation
  • Appellate writing

What We Offer

  • Competitive compensation based upon experience
  • Performance-based bonus opportunities
  • Direct mentorship from experienced litigators
  • Significant courtroom and deposition experience
  • Professional development and litigation training
  • Opportunity for rapid career advancement
  • Collaborative and supportive work environment
  • Downtown Detroit office with exposure to a diverse and sophisticated client base
