Position: Assistant Attorney General (Public Officials).

Overview

The Public Officials Unit of the Office of the Attorney General seeks an experienced attorney to practice in diverse, high‑profile civil litigation, appellate, and general counsel matters. The role represents statewide elected and appointed officials as well as state agencies and agencies’ boards and commissions in complex civil cases involving public policy and statewide or national importance.

Responsibilities

  • Defend state and federal constitutional challenges that seek to invalidate and enjoin state laws or state officials’ actions.
  • Handle highly expedited election law disputes and prosecute administrative actions to enforce campaign and political finance laws.
  • Represent state and federal courts in civil litigation and appeals, including prosecuting civil actions and appeals.
  • Represent judicial and probation officers when subpoenaed and handle C.R.C.P. 106 and C.A.R. 21 actions.
  • Review and advise on escheat and unclaimed property matters.
  • Assist state officials and agencies with open records requests and floor law advice.
  • Provide general counsel to state boards and commissions on the Open Meetings Law.
  • Draft formal and informal Attorney General opinions.
  • Handle contract and Procurement Code disputes for state agencies.

Salary and Staffing

Salary will be set on a biweekly basis and will depend on qualifications. The position may create multiple Assistant Attorney General roles under the State Services section. AAG I (less than 3 years experience) salary range: $88,197–$96,554 annually. AAG II (more than 3 years experience) salary range: $102,099–$136,468 annually.

Qualifications

  • Licensed to practice law in Colorado or eligible to waive into the Colorado Bar.
  • Four or more years of experience litigating civil cases in state and/or federal courts (strongly preferred).
  • Strong client relations and teamwork skills.
  • Experience or interest in trying cases and briefing appeals on an expedited basis.
  • Experience or interest in working on high‑profile cases.
  • Proven ability to develop and implement litigation and appellate strategy in complex cases.
  • Excellent research, analytical, writing, communication, and problem‑solving skills.
  • At least one writing sample must be submitted.

Conditions of Employment

  • Applicants must pass a thorough background investigation before appointment.
  • The Office participates in E‑Verify and will provide Form I‑9 information to confirm U.S. work authorization.
  • Eligible candidates must submit proof of completion of Colorado bar admission before starting employment.
  • Flexible work arrangements are offered; attorneys usually work in‑office at least three days a week.
  • Work outside regular hours and travel, including out‑of‑state travel, may be required; a valid driver’s license is required.
