LAO invests in and fosters the long-term development of its lawyers – a process that starts with the summering and articling experience. Students are provided with the opportunity to experience different areas of law, giving you a comprehensive articling experience in social justice.
Home location: Toronto – Refugee Law Office (20 Dundas St. W.)
Secondary/tertiary locations: Provincial Jails in the GTA and Immigration Holding Centre Rexdale
Compensation: $78,265.25 per annum prorated for 10 months plus benefits.
Area of Search: Students eligible to article in 2027-28
Assignment: 10-month placement, expected start date will be in July 2027
Reporting to: Manager, Refugee Law Office, Toronto
This position is 100% onsite at the location listed above. The successful candidate(s) must be able to commute to the office(s) and work in person on a full‑time basis.
Refugee Law Office Primary Function:
To provide legal representation and advice to refugee claimants in the LOCATION District. LAO is seeking an articling student with a background and interest in Immigration and Refugee law and someone who demonstrates a passionate commitment to refugees and who is able to work collegially in a public sector corporate environment.
Key accountabilities
As an articling student, you will be involved in matters that may include:
• LAO’s Refugee Law Office (RLO) helps clients with precarious immigration status in matters before the Immigration and Refugee Board, all levels of the Federal Courts and in applications to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, and the Canada Border Services Agency.
