Legal Aid Ontario (LAO) is committed to delivering access to justice for vulnerable communities in Ontario. The role is an articling position, offering a 10‑month placement beginning July 2027 that provides hands‑on experience in criminal and family law within our social‑justice mission.
Location & Work Environment
Home location:
Kingston Courthouse (279 Wellington St.). This position is 100% onsite and requires full‑time presence at the office.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide duty counsel services in criminal court: interviewing accused, verifying sureties, conducting surety interviews, facilitating communication between counsel and Crown, and conducting plea interviews.
- Assist in duty counsel services in family court: helping unrepresented clients draft applications, affidavits, and motions; preparing case lists and summaries; observing courtroom presentations and supporting client meetings.
Required Skills & Experience
- Eligible to undertake articles in Ontario.
- Demonstrated commitment to social justice or public‑interest work.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Interest in criminal and/or family law.
- Strong interpersonal skills and sound judgement.
- Solid understanding of the mission of Legal Aid Ontario.
- Understanding of LAO’s client communities and client‑service skills for vulnerable populations.
- Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and video conferencing platforms such as Zoom and Teams.
Compensation & Benefits
Salary: $78,265.25 per annum prorated for ten months, plus benefits. LAO covers all law‑society licensing fees.
