Position Overview

Desmond, Rand & Guerard, P.A. seeks a skilled and client-focused Estate Planning Attorney to join our Wells office. You will work closely with our lawyers, paralegals, and support staff to deliver comprehensive estate planning solutions—including wills, trusts, guardianships, and probate administration—for individuals, families, and closely held businesses throughout Southern Maine. This position comes with an immediate caseload, is supported by a paralegal with decades of experience, and offers full access to the Firm’s Westbrook office for client development and support.

Key Responsibilities

Client Advising & Planning
Conduct in-depth client interviews to assess goals, family dynamics, and asset structures
Develop and present tailored estate plans incorporating wills, revocable and irrevocable trusts, powers of attorney, health care directives, and related instruments
Advise on advanced planning strategies (e.g., Medicaid planning, asset protection, charitable giving vehicles)
Document Drafting & Review
Draft, revise, and finalize estate planning documents in compliance with Maine statutes and case law
Prepare ancillary corporate and trust-related agreements, such as family limited partnerships or LLC operating agreements, where applicable
Probate & Trust Administration
Guide executors and trustees through probate filings, estate tax calculations, accountings, and court-supervised distributions
Coordinate with financial institutions, accountants, and tax advisors to ensure seamless administration
Client Relationship Management
Cultivate long-term client relationships through proactive communication, annual reviews, and plan updates
Collaborate with marketing and business development to deliver seminars or clinics on estate planning topics
Practice Support & Collaboration
Work alongside a highly experienced paralegal—with decades of estate planning and probate expertise—to manage document preparation, court filings, and client follow-up
Work closely and collaborate with the Firm’s other lawyers on client matters
Firm & Practice Development
Participate in continuing legal education (CLE) programs, local seminars, and community outreach
Contribute to process improvements and knowledge sharing within the practice group

Qualifications

Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an ABA-accredited law school
Admission to the Maine Bar in good standing
Minimum of 3–5 years of substantive estate planning and probate experience preferred
Demonstrated proficiency drafting trusts, wills, and related documents under Maine law
Strong analytical skills and attention to detail
