ZA Law is seeking an experienced Workers’ Compensation Attorney with at least four years of recent California workers’ compensation experience to join our growing practice.

This position is designed for an attorney who can independently manage an applicant-side workers’ compensation caseload while working collaboratively with firm leadership and the Workers’ Compensation Division as the practice continues to expand.

This is not the Head of the Workers’ Compensation Division position. We are looking for a strong, experienced attorney who enjoys practicing law, advocating for injured workers, managing cases from inception through resolution, and contributing to the development of a growing practice.

The ideal candidate is knowledgeable, organized, responsive, client-focused, and comfortable handling matters before the California Workers’ Compensation Appeals Board (WCAB).

Key Responsibilities

The Workers’ Compensation Attorney will:

  • Independently manage a caseload of California applicant-side workers’ compensation matters from intake through resolution.
  • Evaluate new matters and develop appropriate case strategies.
  • Represent injured workers before the Workers’ Compensation Appeals Board.
  • Handle conferences, hearings, Mandatory Settlement Conferences, expedited hearings, and trials.
  • Take and defend depositions, including applicant and medical-related depositions as appropriate.
  • Prepare and respond to petitions, motions, trial briefs, reconsiderations, removals, and other WCAB filings.
  • Analyze medical records, QME/AME reports, permanent disability issues, apportionment, causation, and other medical-legal issues.
  • Identify and address potential benefit issues, including temporary disability, permanent disability, medical treatment, and vocational benefits.
  • Develop settlement strategies and negotiate Compromise and Release agreements, Stipulations with Request for Award, and other resolutions.
  • Maintain regular and effective communication with clients regarding case developments, expectations, and strategy.
  • Ensure deadlines, appearances, discovery, medical evaluations, and case milestones are properly calendared and completed.
  • Work collaboratively with paralegals, legal assistants, intake personnel, and other members of the legal team.
  • Collaborate with attorneys in other ZA Law practice areas when matters involve overlapping workers’ compensation, employment, or personal injury issues.
  • Assist with improving case-management procedures, templates, workflows, and best practices as the
  • Workers’ Compensation Division grows.
  • Maintain accurate and timely case documentation and reporting.
  • Provide the high level of client service and advocacy expected ZA Law attorneys

Required Qualifications

  • Active and in-good-standing membership with the State Bar of California.
  • Minimum four (4) years of recent California workers’ compensation experience as a licensed practicing attorney.
  • Substantial experience representing applicants/injured workers strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently manage workers’ compensation matters through the litigation lifecycle.
  • Experience appearing before the WCAB.
  • Experience conducting depositions, hearings, MSCs, settlement negotiations, and trials.
  • Strong knowledge of California workers’ compensation statutes, regulations, WCAB procedures, and applicable case law.
  • Strong understanding of medical-legal reporting, QME/AME processes, permanent disability, apportionment, causation, and settlement evaluation.
  • Excellent legal research, writing, negotiation, and advocacy skills.
  • Strong organizational and case-management abilities.
  • Ability to effectively manage deadlines and competing priorities in a fast-paced litigation environment.
  • Strong interpersonal and client communication skills.
  • Professional judgment and the ability to work independently while remaining collaborative with the broader legal team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Five or more years of California applicant-side workers’ compensation experience.
  • Significant WCAB trial experience.
  • Experience handling complex or high-value workers’ compensation matters.
  • Experience working in a plaintiff/applicant-side law firm environment.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish skills are a plus.
  • Experience with legal case-management technology.

Compensation

The anticipated base salary range for this position is:

$160,000–$210,000 annually

Actual compensation will be determined based on factors including the candidate’s years and depth of directly relevant California workers’ compensation experience, applicant-side experience, demonstrated litigation and trial capabilities, and overall qualifications.
