Overview
Tax Controversy Attorney – You Run the File Jobs in Los Angeles, CA at Law Office for Tax Controversy
If you have five to seven years in tax controversy, you already know the two places this work usually lands. One is a large firm, where you do excellent work on someone else’s matter and meet the client at the closing. The other is a resolution mill, where volume is the product and the outcome is whatever the software prints.
There is a third thing, and there are not many of us.
Who we are
A boutique tax controversy firm in West Los Angeles, led by an attorney with a national reputation in the field and a longer one for ethics. Our clients are individuals, families, and closely held businesses in serious trouble with the IRS, the FTB, the CDTFA, or the EDD. We take a deliberately limited number of matters and work them the way a family office works a balance sheet: completely, personally, and with the client’s whole picture in view.
What you would own
One docket. Yours. From the first notice through the closing letter.
- IRS examinations, including complex and eggshell audits
- Appeals: protests, conferences, negotiated resolutions
- United States Tax Court — petitions through trial preparation
- Collection defense: CDP hearings, liens, levies, installment agreements, offers in compromise, CNC status
- California matters before the FTB, CDTFA, EDD, and OTA — residency, sales and use tax, worker classification
- Penalty abatement, trust fund recovery penalty defense, innocent spouse relief, voluntary disclosures
- The client relationship itself, not only the paperwork attached to it
Strategy calls are yours to make, with the principal available rather than in the way. Cases are staffed so the work can be done properly.
What we are not
- Not a mill. We do not quote a resolution before we have read the file.
- Not an hours factory. There is no 2,000-hour target here, and there is not going to be one.
- Not a firm where ethics is a poster in the lobby. We turn down or redirect business, regularly, and you will be expected to say so when a matter should be turned down. If that sentence is the reason you are still reading, we should talk.
What you bring
- 5-7+ years in tax controversy — private practice, national or Big 4 CPA firm, IRS Chief Counsel, or a state taxing agency
- A U.S. state bar license in good standing; California preferred
- Matters you personally took from intake to resolution, and can talk about in detail
- Writing that holds up in front of a judge and reads cleanly to a frightened client
- Judgment you would be comfortable having examined
Nice to have: Tax Court admission (or willingness to sit for it, on us), an LL.M. in Tax, a CPA or EA, California agency experience, criminal tax or offshore exposure, and genuine fluency with financial records.
What you get
- $150,000–$200,000 base, set by experience and qualifications
- A bonus tied to results and contribution rather than a billing quota
- Medical, dental, and vision; paid time off and paid holidays
- Bar dues, CLE, and Tax Court admission covered
- A real path to partner-track responsibility, and a firm small enough that your work is visible
To apply
Resume, plus one writing sample you drafted yourself – protest, brief, memorandum, or Tax Court filing, redacted as needed. Skip the cover letter. Instead, tell us in a paragraph about a matter you were handed in bad shape and what you did with it.
Every application is read by a person here. You will hear back within two weeks either way.
We are an equal opportunity employer and consider all qualified applicants without regard to any characteristic protected by federal, state, or local law. Qualified applicants with arrest or conviction records will be considered in accordance with the Los Angeles Fair Chance Initiative for Hiring Ordinance.
