Responsibilities
The Florida State University College of Law seeks a Clinical Supervising Attorney to support the work of the First Amendment Clinic, which provides law students with hands-on experience in defending and advancing freedoms of speech, religion, press, assembly, and petition. This position is ideal for an attorney dedicated to protecting constitutional rights and mentoring the next generation of lawyers.
Working closely with the Clinic Director, the Supervising Attorney will supervise student attorneys, support active litigation, and engage in outreach and education. This is a practice-based academic position that blends legal training, client advocacy, and clinic instruction.
Supervise Students:
Guide law students in representing clients on First Amendment-related matters, including freedom of speech and expression, religious liberty, freedom of the press, and government transparency (e.g., public records access).
Provide feedback on student writing, advocacy, and case strategy.
Support students in developing professional responsibility and lawyering skills.
Casework and Legal Strategy:
Assist in litigating and managing ongoing clinic matters, including state and federal cases, amicus briefs, FOIA/public records requests, and impact litigation.
Conduct legal research, draft filings, and collaborate with clients, journalists, demonstrators, and community organizations.
Substantial responsibility for day-to-day case management.
Outreach and Engagement:
Build relationships with local and national advocacy organizations, journalists, and legal professionals to expand clinic impact.
Organize educational programming, workshops, and events for students, lawyers, and the public.
Promote awareness of First Amendment rights in the law school and across the broader campus community.
Academic Contribution:
Help develop clinic materials and participate in teaching seminar components alongside the Director.
Serve as a mentor and professional role model for students interested in constitutional and public interest law.
Qualifications
J.D. from an accredited law school.
Active membership in a state bar (Florida preferred).
At least five years of legal practice, ideally with a focus on civil litigation and experience with both trial and appellate practice.
Demonstrated understanding of constitutional law and non-partisan commitment to protecting First Amendment rights and civil liberties.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience supervising students or early-career attorneys.
Strong written and oral advocacy skills.
Familiarity with relevant state and federal transparency laws (e.g., FOIA, Florida’s Sunshine Law).
Prior work with media clients, nonprofits, or advocacy groups.

Anticipated Salary Range
The anticipated starting salary for this position is $70,000, commensurate with experience and education.
