Background: The National Veterans Legal Services Program (NVLSP) is a high-impact, national nonprofit veterans service organization based in Arlington, Virginia. Established in 1981, NVLSP’s mission to ensure that the U.S. government delivers to our nation’s veterans, active-duty personnel the benefits they have earned due to disabilities resulting from their military service.
To this end, NVLSP and its attorneys provide legal representation at no cost to veterans and surviving family members before the U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims (CAVC) and other federal courts and agencies. NVLSP often serves as amicus or lead counsel in impact litigation throughout the United States. NVLSP also trains thousands of lawyers and non-lawyer advocates in veterans/military law and publishes advocacy materials to assist these advocates in their representation of veterans, service members, and their families. NVLSP wrote the book on veterans’ law—The Veterans Benefits Manual—the nation’s first veterans law treatise.
Position Summary: NVLSP seeks a Staff Attorney-Trainer to support its Veterans Service Organization Liaison Department. The Veterans Service Organization Liaison Department partners with accredited Veteran Service Organizations nationwide by providing legal guidance, advanced training, and technical assistance to strengthen advocacy on behalf of veterans and their families. This position combines legal advising, instruction, and litigation support by providing guidance to Veteran Service Officers (VSOs), delivering veterans law training nationwide, and, as needed, representing veterans before the U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims and the Board of Veterans’ Appeals. This position offers a unique opportunity to build expertise on veteran law while advancing NVLSP’s mission.
Key Responsibilities: The Staff Attorney-Trainer will have the primary responsibility of providing legal services to veterans and veterans service officers (VSOs) by:
(1) Providing legal advice and assistance to Veteran Service Officers representing veterans before VA Regional Offices and the Board of Veterans’ Appeals on matters including disability compensation, pension, survivor benefits, total disability based on individual unemployability (TDIU), special monthly compensation, rating reductions, severance actions, character of discharge determinations, and motions alleging clear and unmistakable error;
(2) Conducting in-person training for VSOs in veterans’ law, including VA benefits, the VA claims and appeal process, and effective advocacy on behalf of veterans nationwide. Travel is expected for up to eight weeks per calendar year; and
(3) As organizational needs require, represent veterans before the Board of Veterans’ Appeals by preparing written legal arguments, participating in virtual hearings, and representing clients before the U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims;
Qualifications
Required
- J.D. from an accredited law school and active bar membership in good standing in any U.S. jurisdiction.
- Minimum one year of veteran law experience.
- Excellent legal writing skills.
- Strong presentation and public speaking skills.
- Ability to travel nationwide up to eight weeks annually.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
Preferred
- VA accreditation.
- Experience teaching or training adults.
- Military service.
Opening/Closing Date: Available immediately, with preferred start date before November 1, 2026; closes when filled.
Work Location and Hours: Remote / flexible.
