JOB SUMMARY: The Attorney provides legal advice and representation according to professional standards. The role involves recruiting licensed attorneys in DC and Maryland for pro bono civil law cases, developing a pool of attorney mentors, and conducting training sessions to potential volunteers at various organizations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
Interview individuals seeking legal assistance and advise on possible options based on current laws.
Provide ongoing legal representation from intake through case completion, including drafting documents and client communications.
Recruit licensed attorneys in DC and Maryland to accept pro bono civil law cases in areas such as family law, employment conflicts, landlord-tenant disputes, consumer/bankruptcy matters, public entitlements, wills/probate, and medical directives.
Develop a pool of attorney mentors to guide less experienced attorneys in specific legal areas.
Conduct training and information sessions about the Legal Network at various organizations to attract volunteers.
Enhance visibility of Catholic Charities’ services to low-income residents to increase service utilization.
Engage in community outreach regarding legal issues.
Assist with internal and external reporting requirements.
Supervise law student interns and volunteers.
Ensure timely submission of program reports.
Serve as liaison with community partners.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:
J.D. degree.
Active membership in the District of Columbia and Maryland bars.
Completion of Continuing Legal Education as required by licensing jurisdiction.
At least two years of experience in civil law.
SKILLS and COMPETENCIES:
Effective verbal and written communication skills, including public speaking.
Ability to interact professionally across diverse cultures and levels.
Proficiency in computer use, preferably in a Windows-based environment.
