About the Firm
Messrs Esther Ong Tengku Saiful & Sree (ETS) is an established Malaysian law firm (est. 1999) based in Subang Jaya, with a practice spanning litigation, conveyancing and real estate, corporate and commercial, employment, immigration (including MM2H), probate and estate administration, and ESG advisory.
The firm is preparing for a potential collaboration with a legal firm in China, opening up cross-border work for Mandarin-speaking clients and China-related matters in Malaysia.
The Opportunity
We are looking for a dynamic, ambitious lawyer who is proficient in Mandarin to join our team. Beyond general practice, this role is positioned to be the firm’s bridge to our prospective China law firm partner — handling Mandarin-speaking clients, China-related transactions and disputes in Malaysia, and cross-border referrals in both directions.
This role suits a lawyer who sees law as a long-term calling and wants to stay focused on the law: the firm actively supports associates who wish to pursue postgraduate studies and specialise (major) in a chosen field of law, and — through our cross-border collaboration — offers the opportunity to pursue licensing to practise in Hong Kong and China. You will receive mentorship from senior partners and the room to build genuine depth in your practice.
Key Responsibilities
• Handle a varied caseload across the firm’s practice areas, including litigation, conveyancing, corporate/commercial, employment, and probate matters, under partner supervision.
• Serve as the principal contact for Mandarin-speaking clients — conducting meetings, correspondence, and negotiations in Mandarin, and translating or reviewing Chinese-language documents.
• Support the firm’s collaboration with its prospective China law firm partner: liaising with counterpart lawyers, coordinating cross-border referrals, and advising China-based clients on Malaysian law matters (including investment, property acquisition, and MM2H-related legal work).
• Conduct legal research and prepare opinions, pleadings, submissions, and agreements in English, Bahasa Malaysia, and (where required) Mandarin.
• Attend court, tribunal, and land office matters; over time, take increasing conduct of contested hearings and trials.
• Contribute to the firm’s seminars, training programmes, and client talks, including sessions delivered in Mandarin for Chinese-speaking audiences.
Requirements
• LLB (or equivalent) and admitted (or eligible for admission) as an Advocate & Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya. Chambering pupils with strong Mandarin capability may also be considered.
• Proficiency in Mandarin (spoken and written) is essential — including the ability to conduct client meetings and read business or legal documents in Chinese.
• Strong command of English and Bahasa Malaysia.
• Dynamic, self-driven, and eager to take ownership of files and client relationships early.
• Genuine interest in cross-border China–Malaysia legal work.
• A long-term commitment to and focus on the law — we especially welcome candidates who intend to pursue postgraduate legal studies (e.g. an LLM) and to specialise in a chosen field of law.
• High integrity, discretion, and professionalism.
