The attorneys for the Office of General Counsel (OGC) handle administrative contested case hearings for department program areas and before boards regulating health care providers, administrative rule making, providing legislative bill analyses, writing formal and informal legal opinions, providing timely and accurate legal advice to all department programs, and advising on ethics issues.

Job Overview
The Tennessee Department of Health is seeking a litigation attorney to serve as a Senior Associate Counsel in its Office of General Counsel. The duties involve complex litigation and caseload management, including complaint review, legal writing, medical record review, working with expert witnesses, negotiating discipline, holding depositions, conducting discovery, and litigating contested hearings.
Key Responsibilities
- Represent the Department in administrative law cases before various medical boards.
- Prepare cases for litigation, conduct medical record review, depositions, discovery, and contested hearings.
- Provide legal advice and drafting services to healthcare licensure boards as necessary.
- Analyze proposed legislation affecting public health.
- Work in a dynamic, team-focused environment and handle a caseload at different phases of litigation.
Minimum Qualifications
- Graduated from an accredited law school with a J.D. (or equivalent).
- At least seven (7) years of relevant legal experience.
- Ability to perform legal duties and litigate with minimal supervision.
