Role Description The School Lawyer Investigator is a remote, contract role responsible for conducting legal investigations related to schools, districts, and educational institutions. Day-to-day tasks include gathering and reviewing documents, interviewing witnesses and stakeholders, analyzing policies and procedures, and preparing detailed investigative reports and legal memoranda. The role involves assessing compliance with applicable education laws and regulations, identifying risk areas, and recommending corrective actions or policy updates. The School Lawyer Investigator will collaborate with school administrators, legal teams, and other professionals, and may assist in preparing for hearings, mediations, and other proceedings. This position requires strong analytical skills, careful documentation, and adherence to ethical and confidentiality standards.

Qualifications

  • Experience in education law, administrative law, or related practice areas, with a focus on schools or public agencies.
  • Strong investigative skills, including interviewing, fact-finding, and evidence collection in complex or sensitive matters.
  • Excellent legal research and writing abilities, including drafting reports, memoranda, and recommendations for school or institutional leadership.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state education laws, regulations, and policies; familiarity with student rights, employee rights, and school governance is beneficial.
  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment, manage multiple investigations concurrently, and meet deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Clear, professional communication skills for engaging with diverse stakeholders, including educators, administrators, students, families, and counsel.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, including accurate recordkeeping and maintenance of confidential files.
  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree and active license to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction; prior experience with school districts or educational institutions is preferred.
