Position Title: School-Based Mediation Specialist (IS2)

Reports To: Director of Crisis Management Systems, NYCID Salary Range: $50,000-$55,000
Funding Period: July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2027 (extended)
Hours: 7:00 a.m. to 3 p.m. (1 hour lunch) – 7:00 am start is non-negotiable Benefits:

Department Overview:
NYICD’s Crisis Management Systems are funded through the City Council Discretionary Crisis
Management Fund, New York State SNUG Violence Prevention, and the Office of Neighborhood Safety
Crisis Management System, which the Department of Youth and Community Development monitors.
The department’s focus is to promote public safety by conducting extensive community outreach for:
● Helping to prevent and defuse potential incidents of violence through the credible messenger
model, Violence Interrupter activities, and Crisis Management, such as Hospital Response, to
prevent retaliation.
● Providing the community and those affected by guns with conflict resolution skills.
● Providing case management services and linking clients to collaborating agencies.

General Summary: CMSI/NYCID
Under the direct supervision of the NYCID Director of CMS, the School-Based Mediation Specialist
will focus on cultivating relations, mediating conflict between participants, supporting NYC Public
Schools staff, and managing case files. The specialist works closely with the IS 2 Principal and
designated staff in the daily case management ensuring that all incidents no matter how seemingly
insignificate are reported for the purpose of aiding NYCPS staff with the ability to properly
report and document all incidents inside the building.
Engaging in all aspects of community engagement, violence interruption, and response.
Minimum Qualifications:
● 3 plus years of experience working with High Risk Populations, High school diploma, BS in a
Human Services field (i.e., Sociology, Social Work, etc.) preferred
The candidate should bring to the position:
● Excellent communication skills
● Strong interpersonal skills for working with program participants from constituencies in a
diverse community
● Knowledge of methods and techniques of effective conflict resolution and mediation practices
● Experienced and proven ability to work effectively in a diverse school centered environment
● Experience facilitating workshops and circles
● Social perceptiveness to be aware of other’s reactions and understanding of the reasons they
react as they do
Duties and responsibilities:
● Works with school administrators (Principal, Assistant Principal, Dean, Lead School Safety, etc.)
to ensure the program’s resources are effectively reaching the population
● Ensure the following is completed for each participant on caseload
○ Develop and implement a risk reduction plan
○ Maintain regular contact with program participants via:
■ In-person contacts and
■ Telephone/video contacts
○ Provide referrals and program/service enrollment to external resources
● Mediate conflicts and offer ongoing mediation services through daily attention and consistent
conflict mediation
● Responsible for maintaining a caseload of up to 15 high-risk participants at any given time
● Responsible for reporting
● Assist with in-school structured sessions
● Assist with Safe Passage
● Attend organization and mission-related meetings
● Build and cultivate relationships with NYCID staff and leadership

● Ability to plan, develop, and assist multiple clients to set and achieve life goals
● Effective written communication skills
● Strong organizational skills: the ability to work independently and accurately with a great
amount of detail
● Knowledge of office management principles and procedures
● Ability to develop, plan, and implement short and long-range professional goals
● Ability to foster a cooperative work environment
● Ability to maintain the highest degree of confidentiality, integrity, and professionalism
● Demonstrated proficiency in operating standard office equipment and Microsoft Office/Google
applications

Additional Notes:
The candidate must be fingerprinted by NYC Department of Education.
There is an initial expense of $119.00 for processing. The candidate is reimbursed expense when
officially hired
