Plant Safety Manager
Mission
Provide leadership and direction for the plant’s health and safety programs, ensuring compliance with OSHA, Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (BWC), and other applicable federal, state, and local safety regulations.
The Plant Health & Safety Manager is the sole health and safety professional at the facility and is responsible for developing, implementing, and continuously improving plant safety and workers’ compensation programs. This position partners with Operations, Engineering, Maintenance, and Human Resources to prevent workplace injuries, reduce workers’ compensation costs, manage safety regulatory compliance, identify and mitigate workplace hazards, and promote a strong safety culture.
The position serves as the plant’s primary health and safety resource and provides technical leadership, training, guidance, and support to employees, supervisors, managers, engineers, and plant leadership.

Position Requirements
Education/Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field.
- Minimum 5 years of progressive health and safety experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
- Demonstrated experience developing and implementing OSHA compliance programs.
- Experience managing workers’ compensation claims, workplace injury reporting, claim investigations, and return-to-work programs.
- Experience working with Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (BWC), third-party administrators, insurance carriers, or similar claims-management organizations preferred.
- Experience working directly with regulatory agencies and responding to regulatory inquiries, inspections, and audits preferred.
Skills/Knowledge/Ability
- Current knowledge of OSHA, Ohio BWC, and other applicable federal, state, and local safety regulations.
- Experience delivering safety, regulatory, and supervisory training programs.
- Experience with OSHA reporting, safety performance tracking, incident investigation, root-cause analysis, and corrective-action management.
- Experience with workers’ compensation claims management, including claim reporting, investigation, follow-up, return-to-work, and claims trend analysis.
- Strong knowledge of hazard identification, risk assessment, injury prevention, and workplace safety.
- Knowledge of machine guarding, lockout/tagout, material handling, ergonomics, and manufacturing equipment safety.
- Strong analytical, organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Computer proficiency, including experience with safety, workers’ compensation, or claims-management systems.
- CSP, ASP, CIH, or other relevant safety certification preferred.
- OSHA 30-hour General Industry training preferred.
Key Result Areas and Activities
1. Lead Plant Health and Safety Programs and Performance
- Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive plant health and safety programs consistent with OSHA requirements, company standards, and industry best practices.
- Establish and maintain plant EHS policies, procedures, standards, and safe work practices.
- Perform risk assessments for direct and indirect labor activities and identify opportunities to eliminate or mitigate hazards.
- Establish safety inspection and audit processes and ensure identified deficiencies are addressed.
- Monitor plant safety performance and establish measurable objectives for continuous improvement.
- Partner with Operations, Engineering, Maintenance, and Human Resources to integrate safety into daily operations and decision-making.
- Provide EHS guidance to supervisors and managers and promote accountability for safety performance.
- Promote employee involvement and a proactive safety culture.
2. Manage Workers’ Compensation and Injury Prevention
- Own and administer the plant’s workers’ compensation program, including injury reporting, claim oversight, documentation, follow-up, and compliance.
- Ensure workplace injuries are reported and investigated in a timely manner and required documentation is complete and accurate.
- Partner with Human Resources, supervisors, medical providers, third-party administrators, insurance carriers, and Ohio BWC as appropriate.
- Monitor open claims, lost-time cases, medical treatment, work restrictions, reserves, and return-to-work status.
- Coordinate transitional and modified-duty programs with Human Resources and Operations.
- Analyze workers’ compensation claims to identify trends, recurring hazards, root causes, and opportunities for prevention.
- Monitor claim frequency, severity, lost-time days, incurred costs, and experience modification factor (EMR), where applicable.
- Develop and implement strategies to reduce injury frequency, severity, and workers’ compensation costs.
- Maintain accurate workers’ compensation records and documentation and coordinate required audits and reviews.
3. Lead Incident Investigations and Corrective Actions
- Lead investigations of workplace injuries, near misses, property damage, and other safety incidents.
- Conduct root-cause analysis and develop corrective and preventive actions.
- Assign, track, and verify completion and effectiveness of corrective actions.
- Review injury and incident trends to identify recurring risks and develop preventive strategies.
- Communicate significant incidents, trends, lessons learned, and corrective actions to plant leadership and affected employees.
- Ensure lessons learned are incorporated into applicable safety programs and training.
4. Manage Safety Compliance and Regulatory Requirements
- Maintain compliance with applicable OSHA, Ohio BWC, and other federal, state, and local safety requirements.
- Serve as the plant’s primary health and safety contact with applicable regulatory agencies.
- Maintain required OSHA, workers’ compensation, and safety records and documentation.
- Ensure required regulatory reports and submissions are accurate and completed on schedule.
- Monitor regulatory changes and implement required program updates.
- Prepare for and coordinate regulatory inspections, audits, and agency inquiries.
- Prepare responses to regulatory agencies and ensure compliance issues are addressed in a timely manner.
- Communicate significant compliance risks and regulatory requirements to plant leadership.
5. Provide Technical Health and Safety Support
- Partner with Engineering, Maintenance, and Operations to incorporate health and safety requirements into equipment, processes, and capital projects.
- Provide technical guidance on machine guarding, lockout/tagout, ergonomics, material handling, and other manufacturing safety requirements.
- Participate in equipment and process reviews and provide recommendations to address identified health and safety risks.
- Support the implementation of safe work practices and engineering controls.
6. Monitor and Improve Health and Safety Performance
- Establish and maintain systems for tracking safety and workers’ compensation performance.
- Develop and maintain health and safety performance metrics and reporting.
- Monitor OSHA recordables, lost-time incidents, near misses, workers’ compensation claims and costs, and corrective actions.
- Analyze health and safety trends and provide recommendations to plant leadership.
- Provide regular health and safety performance updates and improvement recommendations to the Director of Operations.
- Identify opportunities to improve safety performance, workers’ compensation outcomes, and overall health and safety effectiveness.
- Benchmark health and safety practices and performance against applicable manufacturing industry standards.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $70,000.00 – $90,000.00 per year
