ABOUT THE COURT

The Superior Court of Los Angeles County is the largest unified trial court in the United States. Its 582 judges and commissioners work in one of the 36 facilities within the Court’s 12 judicial districts and are supported by more than 5,000 full-time Court employees. The Court has an annual budget of more than $1 billion . Located in Southern California, Los Angeles County is geographically one of the nation’s largest counties, covering 4,752 square miles and, with over 10,400,000 residents, is also one of its most populous counties.

ABOUT THE POSITION

Judicial Assistants are front and center in Los Angeles County courtrooms and play a vital role in providing access to justice every day!

Judicial Assistants work alongside judicial officers, legal counsel, court staff, jurors, and members of the public in an exciting courtroom environment. They are tasked with the vital responsibility of managing the daily flow of courtroom activities to ensure the courtroom runs efficiently. Among other duties, Judicial Assistants maintain the official record of the court (documenting all case dispositions and decisions), act as a liaison between judicial officers and other parties, manage case exhibits, administer oaths, and manage the daily court calendar. Judicial Assistants also manage hybrid and remote hearings as part of their daily responsibilities.

In preparation for this multi-faceted role, Los Angeles Superior Court provides a four to six-month, robust, cohort-based learning program. The program is designed to provide litigation instruction, case management system application, on-the-job training, and professional guidance. This combination of classroom and on-the-job training takes place at various locations throughout the county including Monrovia, and downtown Los Angeles. Upon successful completion of the training program, trainees will be promoted to the position of Judicial Assistant. They will be assigned to one of the Court’s 12 districts throughout Los Angeles County and will be expected to travel and serve in any courtroom across the County.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
To qualify, you must meet one of the following options at the time of application:

Option I:
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university*
Keyboarding at a speed of 30 net words per minute or higher, which will be evaluated during the recruitment process.
United States citizenship

Option II:
Three years of office support experience in a court, at least one year of which must be at or above the level of Court Services Assistant III performing highly specialized clerical duties requiring detailed knowledge of court activities

Note: Credit for experience is given based on a 40-hour workweek. Part-time experience is credited on a part-time ratio, i.e., working 20 hours per week for two months equals one month of experience. No additional credit is given for overtime.

OPTION I EDUCATION VERIFICATION:
To receive credit, a legible copy of your diploma or transcript (unofficial acceptable) detailing the degree conferred and the name of the educational institution must be attached to your online application. EXAMINATION INFORMATION:
PART I: Qualifying evaluation of education, training and experience based upon submitted application materials and supplemental questionnaire.

PART II: Qualifying typing test. All applicants must achieve a speed of 30 net words per minute or higher to proceed in the recruitment process.

PART III: An online examination, weighted at 100%, will assess competencies in multitasking, organization and planning, effective communication, attention to detail, computer and technology awareness, professional potential, achievement, deductive reasoning, willingness to learn, maintaining effective working relationships, analyzing information, learning quickly, generating new ideas, time management, quality of work, adaptability, managing uncertainty, and responsibility.
