This public-facing position plays an essential role in the criminal justice system, makes a positive impact on society, andreports directly to the Supervising Prosecuting Attorney. Under the direction of the Supervising Attorney, the Deputy Prosecuting Attorney provides professional legal services on behalf of the City in court in criminal gross misdemeanor, misdemeanor, civil traffic infraction, community court, and civil code violation cases. The City of Redmond Prosecuting Attorney’s Office handles cases on behalf of the City in bench and jury trials, contested hearings, appeals, and other court and administrative hearings.
Note: As part of the application process, candidates are required to submit a legal writing sample, not exceeding 10 pages in length.
ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES
Reviews, files, and prosecutes misdemeanor cases and contested traffic infraction hearings in King County District Court
Makes charging decisions on criminal case referrals from police
Analyzes case evidence, researches the law, develops arguments, writes legal briefs and memoranda, interviews witnesses, negotiates resolutions, and prepares cases that do not settle for trial
If adverse decision is made by court, determines whether to appeal to higher court with the direction of Supervising Attorney
Collaborates with Supervising Attorney and staff on multiple and/or complex cases
Provides training and legal advice to police officers
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of and Skills in
Laws pertaining to criminal gross misdemeanor and misdemeanor, and civil traffic infraction cases. Although not required, knowledge of code enforcement laws and issues is preferable
Court procedures and rules of evidence
U.S. and Washington State constitutions as well as case law that pertains to both
Analyzing and evaluating case facts, evidence and legal precedent
Preparing cases, securing necessary information, interviewing witnesses, and trying cases in court
Litigation techniques and negotiation; use of oral and written persuasion
Conducting legal research
Conducting jury trials
Ability to
Analyze, prepare, and present comprehensive legal documents
Practice law in a trial environment before a judge and/or jury
Develop rapport and work with the public, police, judges, courthouse, defense counsel, and department staff
Solve complex problems and negotiate
Work independently, handle multiple tasks, prioritize and schedule work
Work under pressure in the courtroom
Deal effectively with difficult and emotional situations
Make complex legal decisions under extreme time constraints
Communicate effectively verbally and in writing
Create empowered work teams and function in various roles within a project or team

QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school
Minimum 3 years of progressively responsible experience as a prosecutor in municipal, district, and/or superior courts
May require relevant certification or higher education coursework as it pertains to the department/division
Any combination of education and experience that provides the desired knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential duties of the position
Licenses and Certificates
Current license and member in good standing of the Washington State Bar Association
Valid Washington State Driver’s License and a driving record that meets city standards

Offers of employment are conditional based on the candidate successfully passing both background and reference checks. Internal candidates are subject to passing a new background if the previous check was conducted more than six months ago.
Additionally, new hires relocating to the area are required to have Washington State residency within 30 days of their start date to comply payroll tax purposes.
