Job Summary
Reporting to the Chief of Police or designee, and under general supervision of the Patrol Sergeant and/or shift supervisor, the temporary, hourly, intermittent Police Officer is primarily assigned to work special events or special assignments, but may also assist with patrol duties. Responsibilities include enforcing laws and ordinances, conducting criminal investigations, writing reports, testifying in court, and applying community policing methodologies.
The role requires integrating professional law enforcement knowledge with the diverse educational environment to meet department and university goals.
Key Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent required; BS/BA degree and law enforcement experience in a college or university setting preferred. Must meet POST minimum requirements, be at least 21 years old, and legally authorized to work in the U.S. The candidate must have completed an approved California Basic POST Academy or recertification within three years prior to hire, pass various examinations and background checks, and maintain a valid California Driver License.
Additional requirements include participation in a Field training program, passing a one-year probation, and compliance with relevant laws and certifications. Proficiency in computers and Microsoft Office is required; knowledge of Google Suite and law enforcement technology is preferred.
Salary and Benefits
Starting salary ranges from $37 to $46 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience. This is a part-time, temporary, non-exempt position. Reappointment depends on performance and budget considerations. The university reserves the right to terminate employment earlier if necessary.
