Job Responsibilities
Perform general police work of average difficulty, responsible for protecting life and property, crime prevention, detection, investigation, and maintaining law and order.
Patrol assigned beats by car to deter crime and observe violations.
Make arrests for violations of laws and ordinances.
Inspect buildings for tampering, juvenile mischief, or unauthorized entry.
Respond to emergency calls, routine complaints, alarms, and take appropriate action.
Conduct traffic law enforcement, including writing citations.
Escort prisoners to jail or court, book prisoners, and assist in their care.
Check suspect information via NCIC and TCIC.
Conduct preliminary investigations at crime scenes.
Investigate traffic accidents and prepare reports.
Direct traffic and prepare various reports and files.
Testify in court, question witnesses, and serve warrants.
Perform desk duties, answer phones, and minor vehicle servicing.
Follow established procedures and use judgment in emergency situations.
Interact with the public, handling conflict situations with tact and judgment.
Minimum Requirements
Must be a U.S. citizen.
High school diploma or GED required.
At least 21 years old, or 18 with specific qualifications (college study, degree, or military discharge).
Pass written exam with a score of 70, physical agility test, oral interview, and psychological evaluation.
Clear background with no recent or serious offenses involving family violence or felonies.
Valid Texas driver’s license and suitable driving record.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of city geography and important locations.
Understanding of criminal, juvenile, and traffic laws.
Knowledge of police principles, practices, and regulations.
Skill in the use and care of firearms and related equipment.
Basic first aid knowledge.
Ability to operate police vehicles and equipment.
Skill in subduing and handcuffing prisoners.
Ability to write detailed reports and follow instructions.
Ability to establish effective working relationships.
Quick decision-making skills in various situations.
