Salt Lake Legal Defender Association is seeking a leader to lead its 16-person Social Services Team that works in the criminal justice system on behalf of indigent clients. The Social Services Leader will report to the Executive Director.

SLLDA is a nonprofit organization in Salt Lake City providing indigent criminal defense services in Salt Lake County. Using holistic defense services, SLLDA teams attempt to address comprehensive client defense through a spectrum of support services. Social Service professionals work as part of a defense team on cases during pre-trial, trial, and post-conviction/sentencing.

The Social Services Leader is part of the Leadership Team at SLLDA, working with supervising attorneys, team leaders and the Executive Director to develop and implement the strategy of SLLDA for the future. The leader collaborates with attorneys, investigators, and others daily regarding strategy for best providing social services care for indigent clients.

The Social Services Leader works with outside agencies to develop and create plans for the justice system and our clients. The leader is responsible for working directly with leaders of Salt Lake County and has the opportunity to impact the future of criminal justice.

The Social Services Leader leads the Social Services team members by providing inspiration, development, guidance, strategy and organization. The team includes capital case manager and mitigation investigators, mental health professionals, substance use specialists and community case managers.

The Social Services Leader will guide and provide support to Social Services Professionals who coordinate with outside services to ensure attorneys and clients receive guidance in addressing mental health issues as well as substance use issues relevant to the legal case, referrals to appropriate community services that meet an individual’s specific needs, recommendations for sentencing plans, and any additional social service referrals to the community.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in social work or a related field (master’s degree or doctorate strongly preferred)
Minimum of 6 years of experience in social work, including 3 years of supervisory experience or progressively more job responsibility (experience within a public defender organization or indigent clientele preferred)
Knowledge of laws, regulations, and best practices related to social service programs
Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership skills
Ability to work collaboratively with staff, clients, and external community partners
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects
Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion

Responsibilities:

Supervise and train staff to ensure that social services programs are delivered effectively and efficiently
Maintain positive relationships with community partners to ensure that our clients receive the best possible care and representation
Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of social service programs and make recommendations for improvement
Participate in community events and initiatives to raise awareness of social service programs for indigent persons and to promote community engagement

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $100,000.00 – $115,000.00 per year
