The office of a federal Member of Parliament is currently seeking a qualified candidate to fill the Parliamentary Assistant role.
Responsibilities
Committee Work and Policy Advising:
Assist the Member of Parliament (MP) in preparing for and participating in committee meetings, specifically “FEWO” and “HESA.”
Conduct thorough research and analysis on issues, policies, and legislation relevant to the MP’s committee work.
Advise the MP on policy matters, emerging issues, and strategic interests related to Private Members’ Business.
Research and Legislative Duties:
Track and analyze the progress and status of legislation, regulations, and policies.
Prepare comprehensive reports, briefs, and notes for the MP on legislative matters.
Ensure the MP is informed and prepared for all votes in the House and Committee.
Communications:
Draft and edit parliamentary speeches, statements, and debate notes for the MP.
Produce various communications materials, including press releases, householders, e[1]blasts, and constituency mailouts.
Coordinate with the Government House Leader and Whip’s office to secure speaking opportunities for the MP.
Social Media and Public Relations:
Manage the MP’s social media accounts, ensuring timely and relevant content is posted.
Respond to policy questions and concerns received via email and social media.
Maintain strong customer relations with constituents through various communication channels.
Event Coordination:
Organize and execute events in Ottawa related to the MP’s role, such as those for the All Party Diabetes Caucus.
Staff the MP at events and meetings, ensuring all necessary follow-up actions are completed.
Office Management:
Assist in managing the Hill Office, including handling phone calls, emails, and postal mail.
Coordinate the recruitment and supervision of interns, volunteers, and summer students as directed by the MP.
External and Internal Relationship Management:
Act as a liaison for the MP in arranging meetings with other MPs, Parliamentary Secretaries, Ministers, and Caucus staff.
Maintain a close working relationship with the Constituency Office Manager and EA, providing updates as needed.
General Duties:
Manage special projects and handle sensitive constituent issues.
Ensure strict confidentiality regarding constituent information and the MP’s personal information.
Develop a strong understanding of the rules related to conflicts of interest, ethics, and House of Commons procedures.
Working Conditions
Location: Ottawa (Hill Office), with some work in the Constituency Office during house adjournments.
Schedule: Full-time, including evenings and weekends.
Salary: Compensation is dependent on qualifications and experience.
