POSITION SUMMARY
Performs difficult skilled clerical and administrative work preparing a verbatim record of all court proceedings, transcribing and preparing legal documents and correspondence, providing general office support and in assisting the Court with legal research and procedures; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Prepares error free, verbatim transcription of all proceedings in accordance with Rules of Civil Procedure;
Provides legal secretarial services;
Maintains attorney and court calendars and dockets;
Serves as receptionist (as needed), maintains office files;
Prepares and maintains legal files and records;
Attends Court hearings as required by Master-in-Equity;
Prepares discs and permanent records in required formats;
Utilizes and maintains current courtroom reporting technology;
Files exhibits, checking for accuracy and proper procedure;
Communicates with Court Administration regarding scheduling and transcript status as necessary;
Ensures compliance with Administrative Orders regarding court reporters;
Utilizes and maintains technology related to court reporting;
Receives, processes and accounts for monies, fees and bonds received by the Court as needed;
Schedules hearings as needed;
Performs general office assistance and receptionist duties as needed;
Acts as media liaison regarding foreclosure sales as needed;
Performs related tasks as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires stooping, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operation of machines, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is not subject to adverse environmental conditions.
Thorough knowledge of legal office practices, procedures and techniques; thorough knowledge of legal terminology and spelling; thorough knowledge of Court functions, organization and policies; ability to maintain complex office and legal records; ability to organize and perform work independently; ability to take and transcribe dictation at a minimum of 80 wpm and type at a minimum of 60 wpm; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High School diploma or GED equivalent is required.
Must have typing, administration, court reporter training and some clerical or legal work experience.
LICENSE, CERTIFICATIONS and OTHER REQUIREMENTS
All regular full-time and part-time employees of Spartanburg County are required by state law to participate in the South Carolina Retirement System.
Possession of valid driver’s license issued in the state of South Carolina.
