To qualify as a GS-12 Paralegal Specialist, you must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level in the Federal Service.

Specialized experience is experience that equips the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience demonstrates a basic knowledge of, and skill in applying, legal sources and reference material such as precedential opinions, case law, legislative history, legal periodicals, Federal Rules of Criminal and Appellate Procedures, JURIS, and related sources (including medical and psychological records) sufficient to analyze and evaluate the legal and factual questions which arise in the conduct of specialized legal programs and a broad array of post-conviction matters (including, e.g., various types of sentence reduction motions and motions based on mental health status).

Examples of such experience are: performing extensive and thorough legal research into the legislative history, precedential cases, decisions, and opinions applicable to particular sentence reduction, mental health, and other types of post-conviction motions; investigating and becoming thoroughly familiar with subject matter details involved in a case or legal matter; determining the specific data needed and best approach to obtain data or to determine the relevance or sufficiency of available legal, technical, or other related data;

coordinating actions with other Federal agencies or State and local jurisdictions that have closely related responsibilities.
