Summary & Purpose of the Position

The Senior Legal Counsel will provide timely and actionable counsel to the North America business on initiatives with respect to relevant privacy requirements. This includes counseling on U.S. federal and state laws that govern collection, use, storage and retention of personal information and on the design of business activities and creation of policies and trainings relevant to these activities. The role also includes other Legal support related to data and security initiatives.
The successful candidate will identify issues and collaborate with colleagues at all levels to find solutions to important challenges early in the project planning process. As part of a growing business and a uniquely collaborative Legal Department, the Senior Legal Counsel will work closely with other attorneys to align, where appropriate, on cross-brand legal guidance. While the position is located in the company’s headquarters in Cambridge, MA, a hybrid home/office working arrangement is available to employees based on role.
The Senior Legal Counsel will be part of the very collaborative North America legal team of nine attorneys. The role will report to an Associate General Counsel, who reports to the Senior Vice President and North America General Counsel (“GC”). The Company and GC place an emphasis on ensuring that all attorneys have a plan and opportunity to expand their experience and expertise.

Main Responsibilities & Technical Competencies

Provide substantial legal support on data privacy and data security matters, as well as data, digital, and analytics matters, including proactive design and implementation of policies and programs to embed data privacy and security awareness in all channels of the NA business and ensure compliance with state and federal laws, support of enterprise projects such as omnichannel platform and business enablement, as well as reactive counseling of cross-functional teams on individual business projects with privacy or other data implications (such as omnichannel efforts).
Serve as a trusted front-line advisor to cross-functional colleagues when they have questions about projects that support their brands and therapeutic areas, escalating as appropriate.
Serve as a “coach” to cross-functional teams by going beyond helping them understand legal guidance for a particular project; support them in cultivating an ability to think through privacy implications when planning for future initiatives.
Build a rapport with internal clients so that they understand you are “in their corner” while protecting the Company. Serve as a true business partner.
Work closely with other attorneys to align, where appropriate, on cross-brand/business unit legal guidance.
As a member of a legal team supporting a dynamic organization, work on special projects and develop and execute trainings on legal topics as needed beyond day-to-day responsibilities.
Handle other matters such as employment law counseling and brand work per prior experience and training at Ipsen
Work with all levels of employees.

Knowledge & Experience:

Experience working in the pharma, biotech, or healthcare sectors.
Substantial experience as privacy counsel and a desire to expand that experience.
Strong work ethic; positive outlook; commitment to legal and business teams.
Patience as well as strong verbal and written communications skills that can be leveraged in critical review committee work.
Solutions-oriented mindset; cross-functional team player with a willingness to tailor the provision of legal guidance to the sophistication and experience of the internal client.
Excellent judgment in executing in role (for example, knowing when to seek alignment either within the Legal Department or with senior business leaders).
Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
Emotional intelligence, including an understanding that different colleagues learn in different ways.
Solid track record of building strong, collaborative working relationships with different personality types.

Education / Certifications:

J.D. degree with excellent credentials from an ABA-accredited law school.
Admitted to practice law in good standing in Massachusetts or another U.S. jurisdiction.

The annual base salary range for this position is $212,000- $260,000.

The pay range displayed above is the range of base pay compensation within which Ipsen expects to pay for this role at the time of this posting. Individual compensation within this range depends on a variety of factors, including, but not limited to, prior education and experience, job-related knowledge and demonstrated skills.
