Overview
FOCUS (Focus on Communities United for Success) urgently seeks a Pro Bono Attorney and Urban Community Advocate with a strong background in non-profit law, grant compliance, and arbitration. This role is pivotal in providing immediate legal support to resolve a critical funding dispute impacting the organization’s operations. The successful candidate will not only offer expert legal representation but also serve as an advocate for urban communities, ensuring that the unique needs and political dynamics of Baltimore City are addressed. An in-depth understanding of Maryland law and the Baltimore City political landscape is essential.
Key Responsibilities
Immediate Legal Representation: Serve as FOCUS’s legal representative in arbitration proceedings to resolve funding disputes.
Contract & Grant Analysis: Rapidly review grant agreements, contracts, and related documents to identify key compliance issues and develop robust legal arguments.
Negotiation & Mediation: Engage with opposing parties and stakeholders to negotiate a swift, fair, and sustainable resolution.
Regulatory Guidance: Provide expert advice on non-profit finance laws, grant regulations, and compliance requirements specific to Maryland.
Strategic Legal Planning: Develop and execute a targeted legal strategy to address issues of unjustified fund withholding.
Documentation & Filings: Prepare legal notices, arbitration briefs, and other necessary filings in an expedited manner.
Stakeholder Coordination: Collaborate with FOCUS leadership to ensure a unified, time-sensitive legal approach.
Urban Community Advocacy: Act as a vocal advocate for urban community interests, ensuring that the unique challenges and political dynamics of Baltimore City are factored into legal strategies and resolutions.
Qualifications
Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
Licensed to practice law in Maryland.
Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in non-profit law, contract disputes, or arbitration.
Demonstrated expertise in grant agreements, funding compliance, and non-profit financial issues.
Proven track record in alternative dispute resolution (ADR), mediation, or arbitration.
In-depth understanding of the Baltimore City political scene and legal environment.
A strong commitment to urban community advocacy and social justice.
Ability to act swiftly and decisively in urgent, time-sensitive legal matters.
Preferred Experience
Experience in resolving non-profit funding disputes or handling grant compliance litigation.
Background working with government or philanthropic grant-making organizations in Maryland.
Familiarity with non-profit financial audits and the regulatory landscape governing fund disbursement in Baltimore and Maryland.
Demonstrated involvement in urban community initiatives and advocacy work.
