A respected nonprofit legal organization serving low-income communities in South Florida is seeking a highly motivated Substantive Paralegal to support its Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC). This program provides education to low-income and ESL individuals regarding their tax rights and responsibilities and offers representation in disputes with the IRS.

The ideal candidate will have experience interviewing clients, an understanding of legal issues impacting underserved populations, and an interest in developing expertise in tax-related matters, including IRS collections and audits. Compensation begins at $39,000 and is commensurate with experience.

Position Summary

Under the supervision of a Senior Attorney, the Paralegal will be responsible for the following:

  • Conduct client interviews to identify key facts, legal issues, and client objectives
  • Provide legal information, guidance, and referrals under attorney supervision
  • Assist in preparing legal and basic financial documents
  • Participate in community outreach and off-site intake efforts
  • Maintain accurate and timely case notes within a case management system
  • Support administrative processes, including collecting intake documentation and identification

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated commitment to serving low-income or underserved communities
  • Strong client interviewing skills and ability to assess legal needs accurately
  • Effective communication skills with a focus on respect, professionalism, and confidentiality
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team and participate in case reviews
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint); ability to quickly learn case management systems
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Basic math and financial literacy, or willingness to develop these skills
  • Ability to manage sensitive information with discretion
  • Dependable work history and consistent attendance
  • Professional demeanor with a client-service mindset
  • Bilingual (Spanish and/or Creole) preferred
