Job Title: Paralegal / Legal Assistant

Location: Indianapolis, IN 46204

Work Schedule: On-site, Monday–Friday

Position Overview

The Paralegal / Legal Assistant serves as a professional staff member supporting the Indiana State Police Legal Office. This role primarily assists Legal Counsel by managing public records requests, conducting legal research, processing legal documentation, and ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations. The position requires strong attention to detail, confidentiality, and the ability to work efficiently in a structured legal environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Process and fulfill Public Records Requests within mandated timelines
  • Conduct legal research on statutes, judicial decisions, and legal codes related to public records
  • Interpret and apply Indiana Code (IC) and Access to Public Records Act (APRA) guidelines for record release or denial
  • Review and redact body camera and dash camera footage in compliance with legal standards
  • Assist in reviewing Indiana Code and Administrative Code for potential updates and improvements
  • Coordinate and assemble documentation for subpoenas and discovery requests
  • Maintain proper indexing, filing, and organization of legal documents
  • Provide administrative support, including answering phones and assisting Legal Office personnel
  • Handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Minimum 2 years of paralegal experience
  • Basic computer proficiency
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information
  • Must be at least 18 years old

Preferred Qualifications

  • Paralegal certification
  • Experience with legal research tools such as LexisNexis and Westlaw
  • Associate’s degree or higher in Paralegal Studies
  • Certification from NFPA (National Federation of Paralegal Associations) or NALA (CLA/CP)
  • Experience developing procedures or process improvements
