The Washington State Attorney General’s Office (“AGO”) provides excellent, independent, and ethical legal services to the State of Washington and protects the rights of its people. The University of Washington Division of the AGO (“Division”) provides comprehensive legal services to the University of Washington (“UW”), which operates three campuses (Seattle, Tacoma, and Bothell) and a large medical enterprise. The Division is comprised of 20 assistant attorneys general (“AAGs”) and provides legal advice and representation across a variety of specialized areas related to UW’s operations.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The position we seek to fill is the Paralegal 2 (NE S CNU). This position provides expert level legal support functions for attorneys, including responding to subpoenas and other legal documents, reviewing public records requests, and preparing materials for various administrative hearings.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Perform complex paralegal support activities under the supervision of AAGs.

Review and redact documents responsive to public records requests.

Assist UW in responding to subpoenas, including communicating with UW staff to obtain responsive documents.

Calendar litigation critical events/dates and monitor cases to ensure no critical deadlines are missed.

Review litigation and subpoena files and critically analyze complex legal and factual issues.

Interpret and explain complex court rules, policies, and operating procedures.

Navigate federal and state court sites to search for case dockets and retrieve copies of court pleadings.

Help draft letters, pleadings, and other documents.

Conduct legal and other technical research utilizing Westlaw and other resources.

Assist attorneys in preparing for meetings, hearings, etc.

Respond to requests for information and for copies of documents.

Field incoming calls and provide assistance to clients, outside counsel, etc.

Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Combination of four years of experience through paralegal certification, two-year paralegal degree, and/or paraprofessional experience in support of an attorney.

OR Three years’ experience as a Paralegal 1.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Prior experience working for a public governmental agency or higher education institution.

High proficiency with computers and MS Word, Databases, Outlook, Excel, and Law Manager.

Excellent communication and organizational skills.

Attention to Detail.

Ability to keep calm under pressure.
