This Officer position is located in the Judge Guenther Memorial Center within the Office of Court Services. The primary responsibilities include performing duties as a Pretrial Services Officer as defined by statute, and assisting with other programs within the Office of Court Services. The role requires working non-traditional hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and being on-call on a rotating basis.
The Officer reports to the Misdemeanor Probation/Pretrial Services Supervisor, other supervisors, or the Director of Court Services, and presiding judges.
Officer Duties
Counsels, investigates, interviews defendants, and supervises them within court authority.
Investigates defendants’ backgrounds and criminal histories.
Supervises and manages individual caseloads independently.
Prepares reports, affidavits, and violation reports.
Responds to crisis situations promptly, making life-saving decisions without immediate supervision.
Employs statutory guidelines, case law, and evidence-based practices to deescalate situations, and makes arrest or detention decisions respecting defendants’ civil rights.
Conducts in-person screenings at the Detention Center to assess risk levels and makes recommendations regarding reporting conditions and supervision levels.
Queries criminal history databases such as CJIN/NCIC, Zuercher, and Full Court.
Testifies in court and administrative hearings regularly.
Performs drug and alcohol testing on defendants and clients.
Maintains case files and updates database records.
Schedules court appearances for in-custody defendants.
Handles financial procedures like collecting payments and issuing receipts.
Prepares reports on non-compliance violations.
Maintains electronic monitoring equipment, including setup, supervision, and inventory.
Participates in on-call rotations, investigating reports from law enforcement and addressing violations, possibly outside regular hours.
Assists walk-in clients and directs them appropriately.
Performs additional duties such as Misdemeanor Probation Officer tasks, drug testing, or other responsibilities as needed.
This role requires knowledge of the court system, statutory authority for Pretrial and Misdemeanor Probation Officers, and techniques for interviewing and supervising defendants. Familiarity with community resources and skills in motivational interviewing, counseling, jail interviews, and monitoring (including alcohol and GPS) are beneficial. The candidate must understand local and state criminal justice laws, maintain positive relationships, exercise good judgment, and handle sensitive information confidentially.
The position demands record-keeping skills, office equipment operation, and the ability to attend POST training at the Montana Law Enforcement Academy, including firearms training.
Licenses and Certifications:
Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license, have reliable transportation, and be insurable. Final candidates will undergo criminal background checks and investigations.
